Mocs Finish Fourth at SSC Championships, Creighton Ties for Ninth Place Overall

SAINT LEO - Florida Southern concluded play here Tuesday afternoon in the 2013 Sunshine State Championships by shooting a final round score of 296 to finish the three-day event in fourth place out of nine teams at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.

With its final round score of 296, the fourth-ranked Moccasins concluded the tournament with a 54 hole score of 881 as a team, which was five shots behind third-place and eighth ranked Lynn (876) and three shots in front of fifth-place Rollins (884). The Mocs entered Tuesday's final round sitting in fourth place just six shots behind Lynn for third place, but the Fighting Knight shot a 297 on Tuesday to drop its margin to five strokes behind the Mocs.

Barry, who entered the final round in second place, fired a one-under par 287 in Tuesday's final round to dethone two-time defending SSC Champion and No. 1 ranked Nova Southeastern by one stroke. The Sharks, who held a three-shot lead over the Buccaneers entering the final round, shot a 291 on Tuesday to finish with an 860 as a team. Barry, who is ranked No. 2 nationally, shot a 859 to win its first-ever SSC title in men's golf.

Eckerd (892) finished sixth, while Florida Tech (906) came in seventh place, Tampa shot a 910 for 54 holes to finish in eighth place and tournament host Saint Leo shot a 920 for 54 holes to round out the field.

The Mocs were led by senior Peter Creighton (Kenmore, N.Y.), who fired a 54 hole total of 218 to finish tied for ninth place. Creighton, who carded a two-over par 74 in Tuesday's final round, had two birdies and two bogeys in the final round. Creighton finished with rounds of 71, 73 and 74.

Despite losing the team title, NSU did take home the individual medalist honor as Ricardo Celia fired a two-under par 70 in the final round and finished with a seven-under par 209 to finish two shots in front of Eckerd's Jeff Evanier, who carded a 211 for 54 holes.

In additon to Creighton, senior Case Gard (Lakeland, Fla.) fired a 54 hole total of 219 (77, 69, 73) to finish tied for 13th. Gard shot a one-over par 73 in the final round as he had three birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey on the final hole, while junior Tim Crouch (Mt. Vernon, Ohio) fired a 73 in the final round and shot a 54 total of 220 to finish tied for 15th place. Crouch finished with three birdies and four bogeys in the final round.

Freshman Austin Schultz (Lakeland, Fla.) shot a 76 in Tuesday's final round to push his 54 total to 224 as he finished in a tie for 21st place, while the final Moc golfer was junior Shane Convery (Ponte Vedra, Fla.), who carded a 236 for 54 holes, including an 80 in Tuesday's final round, to finish in a tie for 38th place.

The Mocs will return to the course on May 6-8 as they are expected to receive an at-large berth in the NCAA Division II South/Southeast Super Regional, which will be held at the Mission Inn Resort and Club in Howie-in-the-Hills, Fla. The top 10 teams from each the South and Southeast Region will earn a spot in the super regional tournament. The top five teams and top two individuals not with a team from each regional (regardless of region) will advance to the Division II National Championships on May 20-24 at the Hershey Country Club in Hershey, Pa.
