FARMINGDALE, NY - After two rounds of play here Saturday at The Doc Gimmler hosted by St. John's University, Florida Southern stands tied for fourth out of 14 teams after carding a 284 in the second round at the historic Bethpage State Park's Red Course.
With its 284 in the second round, the Moccasins, who teed off its 2013-14 season on Saturday, have totaled a one-under 559 through 36 holes to stand one shot behind third place Marquette (558) and five shots behind second place Harvard (554). Yale continues to lead the tournament as they have shot a two rounds total of 546 after carding rounds of 270 and 276 respectively.
Leading the way for the Mocs through two rounds is senior Shane Convery (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) as he followed up his two-under par 68 in the first round with a one-under par 69 to push his two round total to 137 to stand in seventh place. After the first round, Convery and senior Tim Crouch (Mt. Vernon, Ohio) were tied for fifth.
After having four of its five players shoot par or better in Saturday's first round, the Mocs had only two players shoot par or better in the second round. In addition to Convery's 69, redshirt sophomore Alex Carpenter (Westerville, Ohio) fired his second straight round of even par 70.
Yale's Joe Willis, who carded a seven-under 63 in the first round, continues to lead the tournament as he fired a 68 in the second round to push his 36 hole total to 131. He is three shots in front of his nearest competitor, Columbia's Brandon Jowers, who fired a 66 in the second round to push his 36 hole total to 134. Temple's Brandon Matthews (66, 69), Yale's Jonathan Lai (66, 69) and Harvard's twosome of Robert Deng (68, 67) and Kendrick Vinar (67, 68) have each shot 135's to stand tied for third place.
In addition to Convery, Crouch, who followed up his first round score of 68 with a 73 in the second round, and Carpenter, who has shot back-to-back rounds of 70, have both carded a one-over 141 for 36 holes to stand tied for 19th. Sophomore Austin Schultz (Lakeland, Fla.) and freshman Jason Huntington (Lakeland, Fla.) are both tied for 26th with 36 hole scores of 142. Schultz fired rounds of 69 and 73, while Huntington carded a 70 and 72 in his first two rounds as a collegiate golfer.
In addition to Yale, Harvard, Marquette and FSC, Army and Temple are tied for fifth place after shooting 559's through two rounds, while Columbia is seventh after shooting a 565 for 36 holes and IUPUI shot a 572 for 36 holes to stand eighth. Seton Hall (573) is ninth and the Pirates are followed by Princeton (574) in 10th, St. Thomas Aquinas (576) is 11th, St. John's, who is the host team for the tournament, has shot a 578 for 36 holes to stand in 12th place. Johnson & Wales (581) and Navy (586) are 13th and 14th overall through two rounds.
FSC's fivesome will conclude play in the tournament on Sunday as they tee off beginning at 8:18 a.m. from the first hole on the Bethpage Red Course. The Mocs will be paired with Army and St. John's in Sunday's final round.
