GAINESVILLE â€" Florida Southern put four swimmers in the “B†finals of three different events Friday night, with sophomore Raul Garrastazu in two of them, and junior Allan Gutierrez winning one of those races, as the Moccasins began the 2013-14 season at the All Florida Collegiate Invitational.
The Moccasins finished day one of the meet in fourth place, behind front-running Florida, Florida State, and Nova Southeastern. The Gators led the Seminoles by 92 points, and the Sharks by 219. The Moccasins were only 21 behind the Sharks with two days remaining, with Florida Southern scoring a total of 134 points.
Florida Southern’s best performance actually came in the first event of the day, the 200-yard freestyle relay, where their top team of senior Robbie Swan (Snellville, GA), freshman Diego Gimenez (Burgos, Spain), junior Luis Rojas (Caracas, Venezuela), and Gutierrez (San Pedro Sula, Honduras) placed fifth with a time of 1:23.69. Only Florida and Florida State teams finished ahead of them, and the Mocs’ #2 team of sophomore Edson Lima (Rio De Janeiro, Brazil), junior Jesus Marin (Cumana, Venezuela), freshman Franco Lupoli (Weston, FL), and redshirt freshman Alec Wathen (Sunrise, FL) was seventh in a time of 1:27.24.
The Moccasins got their first individual points from Lupoli in the 500-yard freestyle, where the freshman finished second in the “B†finals in a time of 4:41.81. Sophomore Juan Tolosa (Guipuzcoa, Spain) was two spots and less than two seconds behind him, followed closely by Marin and Garrastazu (Dorado, PR).
The 200-yard IM also saw four Moccasins in the “B†finals, with Rojas leading the way at 1:55.05, followed by Dylan Lake (Rogue River, OR), Wathen, and Garrastazu.
Florida Southern then scored 25 points in the final individual race of the night, as Gutierrez won the “B†final of the 50-yard freestyle in 21.10 seconds. That was actually faster than two of the swimmers in the “A†finals, and Swan was also faster than those same two swimmers with his 21.23. Gimenez and Rojas reached the “B†finals in the 50-yard freestyle as well.
The night ended with the Florida Southern 400-yard medley relay team of freshman Evan Coleman (Yarmouth, ME), freshman Mason York (Kingfisher, OK), Garrastazu, and Gimenez placing seventh.
