GAINESVILLE - Florida Southern put three swimmers in the "A" finals of two different events Saturday and had four swimmers in the "B" finals of two different events on the second day of the 2013 All-Florida Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of Florida.
The Moccasins finished the second day of the meet in third place, behind front-running Florida and Florida State University. The Gators lead the Seminoles by 183 points and FSC by 495 points. FSC has scored a total of 346 points to stand 27 points in front of its Sunshine State Conference rival Nova Southeastern, who has scored a total of 319 points.
Florida Southern's best performances of the day came in the first event, 200-yard medley relay and last event, the 800-yard freestyle relay.
In the 200-yard medley relay, their top team of freshman Diego Gimenez (Burgos, Spain), redshirt freshman Alex Wathen (Sunrise, Fla.), junior Allan Gutierrez (San Pedro Sula, Honduras) and senior Robbie Swan (Snellville, Ga.) placed fifth with a time of 1:35.79. Only Florida and Florida State's teams finished ahead of them, while the Mocs' 'B' team of sophomore Edson Lima (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), sophomore Dustin Nguyen (Snellville, Ga.), freshman Evan Coleman (Yarmouth, Maine) and junior Jesus Marin (Cumana, Venezuela) was seventh with a time of 1:39.95. Meanwhile, in the 800-yard freestyle relay, the Mocs' top team of junior Luis Rojas (Caracas, Venezuela), Gutierrez, freshman Franco Lupoli (Weston, Fla.) and Marin finished fourth with a time of 6:49.36 as the only team's to finish ahead of FSC were Florida and Florida State, while its 'B' team of sophomore Raul Garrastazu (Dorado, Puerto Rico), sophomore Juan Tolosa (Guipuzcoa, Spain), junior Dylan Lake (Rogue River, Ore.) and Wathen was seventh with a time of 7:10.40.
The Mocs first individual points of the day came from Tolosa in the 400 yard IM, as he finished fifth in the "B" finals with a time of 4:16.68. In addition to Tolosa, Lake was right behind him in sixth place with a time of 4:18.02. Wathen and sophomore Diego Ulloa (Jacksonville, Fla.) scored the other points in the event as they finished seventh and eighth respectively.
In the 100-yard butterfly, the Mocs had four swimmers qualify for the "B" finals as Gutierrez was the top finisher as he came in first with a time of 50.63, while Lima was right behind him with a time of 51.62. Garrastazu and Gimenez also competed in the "B" finals and finished fourth and fifth respectively.
The Mocs first competitor in an "A" final was Rojas as he finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.86. In the "B" final of the same event, Marin, Lupoli and Gutierrez finished third, fourth and fifth respectively to help the Mocs score a total of 27 points.
In the next event final, four Mocs competed in the "B" final of the 100-yard breaststroke as Nguyen was the highest finisher with a time of 1:03.63 to finish fifth. The other three Mocs in the "B" finals were freshman Mason York (Kingfisher, Okla.), Ulloa and Lake, who finished sixth, seventh and eighth respectively.
The final individual event of the second day was the 100-yard backstroke and the Mocs sent two swimmers, Gimenez and Rojas to the "A" finals, while Lima and Swan qualified for the "B" finals. In the "A" final, Gimenez finished seventh with a time of 51.96 and Rojas was eighth with a time of 52.03, while Lima was the top finisher in the "B" final as he was third with a time of 53.00. In the event, the Mocs combined to scored 34 points.
Day three of the meet gets underway Sunday morning with preliminaries at 9 a.m., with the finals in six events starting at 4 p.m. On Sunday, the events will consist of the 1,650-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 200-yard butterfly and the final event being the 400-yard freestyle relay.
