VALDOSTA, Ga. - Florida Southern opened up play here Monday by shooting a 603 through 36 holes to stand in 13th place out of 18 teams at the 2014 Southeastern Collegiate hosted by Valdosta State and held at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
The 15th-ranked Moccasins opened the day by shooting a 305 in the first round, before rebounding to shoot a 10-over 298 in the second round. The Mocs are within 13 strokes of sixth place heading into Tuesday's final round. FSC is three strokes in front of seventh-ranked West Florida (606), who is 14th and Clayton State is one stroke in front of FSC as they shot a 602 on the tournament's first day of action.
Top-ranked Barry and No. 2 ranked Lynn sits atop the leaderboard as both teams each shot 572's for 36 holes. Barry fired rounds of 291 and 281, while Lynn shot rounds of 289 and 283. Valdosta State (289, 294) and ninth-ranked Armstrong Atlantic (294, 289) are tied for third as they each shot 583's for 36 holes. ÂÂ
Leading the way for the Mocs is senior Shane Convery (Ponta Vedra, Fla.), who fired back-to-back rounds of two-over par 74 to stand in a tie for 26th place. In the opening round, Convery had three bogeys and one birdie and then recorded five bogeys and three birdies on his card in the second round.
Georgia College's Bryan Fox sits atop the leaderboard after shooting a four-under par 140 (69, 71) to sit one stroke in front of Saint Leo's Ryan Gendron and Lynn Ernesto Vitienes, who each shot a three-under par 141 for 36 holes. Gendron shot rounds of 71 and 70, while Vitienes also carded rounds of 71 and 70.
In addition to Convery, senior All-American Tim Crouch (Mt. Vernon, Ohio), who is the tournament's defending individual medalist, shot rounds of 77 and 74 to finish in a tie for 45th place with a 151 for 36 holes. Redshirt sophomore Alex Carpenter (Westerville, Ohio) also fired a 151 for 36 holes to stand tied for 45. Carpenter also posted rounds of 77 and 74 on Monday.
FSC's final counter on Monday was sophomore Austin Schultz (Lakeland, Fla.), who fired a 153 for 36 holes to stand tied for 62nd. Schultz opened with a 77 in the first round before shooting a 76 in the second round.
The final competitor for the Mocs was freshman Jason Huntington (Lakeland, Fla.), who shot a 160 for 36 holes to stand tied for 82nd place. Huntington opened the first round by shooting an 84 and then rebounded to shoot a 76 in the second round.
FSC will conclude play in the final round of the Southeastern Collegiate on Tuesday beginning at 9:15 from the No. 10 tee. The Mocs five golfers will play in threesomes with West Florida and Delta State.
