Mocs Tied for Ninth After Two Rounds of Guy Harvey Invitational; Jones and Coultas Sit Ninth Overall

PALM BEACH GARDENS - Florida Southern fired rounds of 291 and 295 here Monday afternoon to stand in a tie for ninth place out of 18 teams following two rounds of play at the Guy Harvey Invitational hosted by Nova Southeastern University and held on the Champion course at PGA National Golf Club.

The Moccasins, who are one of 10 nationally ranked teams in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches' Poll competing in the tournament, opened play Monday by firing a 3-over 291 in the first round, before shooting a seven-over par 295 in the second round to finish the first day of action with a 10-over score of 586 and is tied with Rollins, who was the first round leader after shooting a 285, fired a second round 301 to fall into a tie with the Mocs. 

FSC, who is ranked eighth in the coaches poll, enters Tuesday's final round within 15 shots of the leader, 11th-ranked Saint Leo, who shot rounds of 286 and 285 to finish with a 5-under par 571 for 36 holes. 

Third-ranked Barry, fifth-ranked Lynn and ninth-ranked Flagler are each tied for second place as they have shot two-over par 578's through the first two rounds. Barry fired rounds of 286 and 292, while Lynn had rounds of 291 and 287 and Flagler shot rounds of 286 and 292.

Top-ranked and tournament host Nova Southeastern and Indianapolis are tied for fifth as they have shot three-over 579's for 36 holes. Nova Southeastern shot a 286 in the first round and then carded a 293 in the second round, while Indianapolis had rounds of 292 and 287 respectively.

Leading the way for the Mocs are sophomores John Coultas (Valrico, Fla.) and Jimmy Jones (Tampa, Fla.), who are both tied for ninth after shooting 1-under par 143's for 36 holes. Coultas opened play on Monday by shooting an even-par 72, before firing a 1-under 71 in the second round, while Jones shot a 2-under 70 in the first round and then recorded a 1-over 73 in the second round. 

Coultas and Jones are two of 24 golfers that shot par or better after 36 holes, including 16 golfers firing scores of under par on the recently redesigned 7,045-yard Champion course at PGA National.

North Alabama's Forrest Knight and Saint Leo's Joey Savoie share the lead after Monday's first two rounds of action as they have each shot 5-under 139's for 36 holes. Knight, who was tied for 16th after the first round after shooting a 1-under 71, fired a 4-under 68 in the second round, while Savoie shot a 5-under 67 in the first round and then fired an even-par 72 in the second round. 

First round leader Jordan Ebanks from Flagler followed his opening score of 65 with a 3-over 75 in the second round to fall to third place with a 4-under 140 for 36 holes. 

Along with Coultas and Jones, sophomore John VanDerLaan (Southbury, Conn.) fired rounds of 73 and 74 respectively to stand tied for 30th with a 3-over 147 for 36 holes. 

FSC's final counter on Monday was freshman Michael VanDerLaan (Southbury, Conn.), who is the younger brother of John, shot rounds of 76 and 77 to finish in a tie for 69th place with a 153 (+9) in his first two rounds as a collegiate golfer.

Freshman Christian Anderson (Ocala, Fla.) shot back-to-back rounds of 80 and 78 to sit in a tie for 87th with a 158 for 36 holes.

FSC also has one individual performer competing in the Guy Harvey Invitational as redshirt freshman Grant Lovell (Ocala, Fla.) shot rounds of 76 and 77 to sit in a tie for 69th place with a 153 for 36 holes. Lovell played his first two rounds as a collegiate golfer on Monday.

The Moccasins' fivesome will tee off on Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m. from holes 8-11 on the Champion course. FSc will play the final round with Rollins, North Alabama and Florida Tech.
