First Tournament of the Year Ends With Career-Bests for McWilliams and McKew

SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. – With Shannon McKew again setting the pace for Florida Southern, and sophomore Kolby McWilliams not far behind, the Moccasins wrapped up play at the Ross Resorts Invitational Tuesday with its best round of the tournament, while Rollins won the team and individual titles in the first event of the season.

With a final round 76, McKew moved up 13 spots in the final standings and finished in a tie for 16th place with a 3-round total of 236. The 76 was a new career-best for the redshirt junior, topping her score from Monday's first round by one stroke. That also earned McKew her first top-20 finish.

McWilliams was playing in the tournament as an individual, and as such her scores did not count toward either the varsity team or the "B" team's score, but she too had the best showing of her college career. Closing with a five-over par 77, McWilliams' 3-round total of 242 put her in a tie for 34th place. That moved her 12 spots up in the standings from where they had ended play on Monday.

McKew and McWilliams weren't the only Moccasins who made a nice jump on Tuesday. Sophomore Abbey Williams was also up 13 spots following a 79 that led the Florida Southern varsity team in the final round. She tied for 63rd overall with a 254, and nearly caught junior Britta Bernth, who tied for 61st with a 253.

Overall, the Mocs' varsity squad was led by seniors Colleen Panosian, Kit Creighton, and Emma Marlatt, who had scores of 249, 250, and 251 respectively, to finish 57th, tied for 58th, and 60th. Panosian and Creighton turned in their lowest score of the tournament, helping Florida Southern post a team total of 322. That put the Mocs in the middle of Tuesday's scores and moved them ahead of Wingate in the final standings.

In addition to McKew, the Florida Southern "B" team featured freshmen Tori Higgins (255), Madison Wetzel (257), Marisa Boccabella (261), and senior Emily Tofaute (263).

Rollins, which was serving as tournament host, captured the team title with a 919 (315-301-303), topping Barry by 16 shots, and West Florida by 18. Nova Southeastern and Lynn tied for fourth, and finished 22 strokes behind the Tars.

Winning medalist honors was Hally Leadbetter of Rollins, who was playing as an individual. Leadbetter had scores of 77, 74, and 74 throughout the tournament to finish at nine-over par 225. That was one stroke ahead of Paloma Vaccaro of West Florida, and two ahead of another Rollins golfer, Annie Dulman. Vaccaro had the best round of the day with an even-par 72.

Florida Southern's next tournament will be this Saturday and Sunday in Daytona Beach at LPGA International where the Moccasins will take part in the Lady Falcon Fall Invitational.
