Florida Southern's John Coultas has been selected as the Sunshine State Conference Men's Golfer-of-the-Week after leading the Moccasins to the tournament title at the Southeastern Collegiate hosted by Valdosta State on March 14 and 15. He's the first Moccasin to earn that award since Tim Crouch won it twice in the spring of 2013.
Coultas won medalist honors last week in the 54-hole event played at Valdosta's Kinderlou Forest by defeating Lynn University's Mateo Gomez in a one-hole playoff. The two golfers each shot a 3-under par 213, with Coultas posting scores of 68-73-72, to finish the tournament deadlocked. Coultas then birdied No. 18 in the playoff to claim his second individual win of the season. He also won the Guy Harvey Invitational during the fall portion of the schedule.
A sophomore from nearby Valrico, Coultas has now won three tournaments in his career and has five other top-five finishes, including runner-up at last year's Sunshine State Conference Tournament. Last week marked the fourth time in seven tournaments this season that Coultas has been three-under par or better, and the sixth time in his last 10 tournaments dating back to last year when he was a First Team All-American and won the Phil Mickelson Award as the Most Outstanding Freshman in Division II.
Coultas and the Moccasins are competing in the Bobcat Invitational hosted by Georgia College this Monday and Tuesday, which will be Florida Southern's final tournament of the regular season.
