Men's Tennis Wins 10th-Straight Match, Defeat Bluefield State

LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College men's tennis won its 10th-straight match on Wednesday afternoon at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center as it won 4-1 over Bluefield State. The No. 18 Moccasins (11-1) defeated its seventh above-.500 opponent of the season in the Blues (8-3).

"The guys have proven to be disciplined and resilient," head coach Greg Van Emburgh said. "This is a solid win for us and will help us get better and stronger leading into our conference schedule."

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Mocs earned the doubles point after Erik Nordblom and Andres Cabezas won 6-3 in the No. 1 flight and Pablo Salamanca and Valentin Hertweck triumphed by the same score in the No. 2 flight. Brian Pham and Tim Becker were winning 5-2 in the No. 3 flight before it was called.
  • Cabezas closed the No. 2 singles flight with a 6-3, 6-0 performance while Hertweck earned the No. 3 flight with a 6-4, 6-2 decision.
  • Bluefield State earned a point back as Fabian Avila won 6-4, 6-0 in the No. 6 flight but the Mocs clinched the match in the No. 5 flight as Chase Martin won 6-3, 6-4.
  • Erik Nordblom was leading 6-4, 0-6, 4-1 in the No. 1 flight and Oscar Sohl was leading 3-6, 6-2, 2-1 in the No. 4 flight before they went unfinished.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • The Moccasins' 11-1 record is the best start to a season since 2007 when the program went 15-1 to start the season.
  • FSC is now 3-2 all-time against the Blues, snapping a two-match losing streak to the foe and winning its first match against them since March 19, 2014.

UP NEXT:

Southern will continue its homestand with thre more matches in-a-row. The Mocs will host Texas-Tyler, Northwood and Auburn Montgomery from Thursday through Saturday. The first match will be at 3 p.m. while Friday's contest is at 4 p.m. and Saturday's at 11 a.m.
