PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's tennis team opened the fall tournament schedule with a positive showing at the 2025 ITA South Regional Championships at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex.
Â
The Moccasins made the trip to the University of West Florida for this year's ITA fall tournament with three doubles pairings and four singles players competing. Highlighting the trip, both
Mario Garoz and
Mario Antonio Morales advanced to the round of 16 in the main draw.
"ITA was a mixed bag of results, but it was a really good gauge of where we are and what we need to work on," said head coach
Rhett Rollyson on the team's performance. "I don't think we've had two players in the round of 16 in a long time, so that is very encouraging. Mario Antonio beat the #1 seed on his home court in a hostile dual-match-type environment, which was really special. We also defeated two seeded teams in doubles, which was promising, as we are working hard to see which pairs play well together."
Â
The competition started with doubles, with a pairing of
Bosko Boskovic and
Gabriel Jornert advancing with an 8-5 win. They later lost 8-6 in the round of 16 on Thursday. Two new pairings for FSC included
George Russell and
Marco Cinotti, as Garoz and Antonio Morales also teamed up for the first time. Both pairings lost their first matchup, with Antonio Morales and Garoz winning 8-6 in a consolation match. That was the final win in doubles for the Mocs, finishing 2-5 overall as a team.
Â
In singles the following day, Antonio Morales won 6-3, 6-1 and later 6-4, 1-6, 11-9 to make it to the round of 16. He later lost to Adam Lynch, a previous ITA South Regional champion. Garoz also made it to R16 with a 6-2, 6-3 opening win and a dominating 6-0, 6-0 second round win.
Youssef ElShafei and
Matthew Hewitt also competed for the Mocs, dropping their ITA matchups.
