LAKELAND, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's tennis extended their win streak to six to remain undefeated at home with a 6-1 win over Hillsdale College Monday afternoon at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
The No. 25 Mocs (7-3, 1-2 SSC) won the doubles point and nearly all of the singles flight in their first match in nearly a week after three canceled or postponed matches due to poor weather. The Chargers (4-7) lost their second match in a row, after losing to Saint Leo yesterday.
In doubles competition,
Erik Nordblom and
Oscar Sohl continued to shine as they won their flight in a 6-1 decision. For the point-deciding flight,
Brandon Pham and
Brian Pham won against their Hillsdale opponents 6-0. Despite a strong effort by the Mocs, the third flight went to the Chargers as the point still went to Florida Southern.
In singles competition,
Hikaru Nagoshi won his flight on court six in a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win to start out the Mocs 2-0 lead. With a nationally ranked battle in the #1 spot,
Valentin Hertweck, No. 72 in ITA rankings, won his flight against No. 18 Brennan Cimpeanu by retirement, winning the first set and a comfortable second set lead as the match was called. The match-deciding point went to Nordblom in a 6-2, 6-2 win. The Mocs continued their match play with
Brandon Pham winning his singles flight as Sohl carried the momentum into singles to win his match in two sets. Despite a tough tiebreaker match,
Elliott Altman was just short in his flight for the Chargers only point.
