Mocs Minutes: Softball and Men's Lacrosse at Home During Busy Spring Weekend

  • Florida Southern has another ranked opponent to face after a tough 6-1 loss to No. 1 Nova Southeastern at home on Monday. Despite the loss, the Mocs nearly won the doubles point, with the point-deciding flight on #3 after a split first two flights. Pairing of Minnie Kim and Vivien Charvatova were the doubles flight winner for the Mocs, and Olivia Bryant the sole singles winner to extend Bryant's win streak to 10 straight games in singles competition. The Mocs continue to have Mathilda Vidgren and Laura Vetter in the top 50 in the nation for doubles pairings in the latest ITA rankings.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic host the Mocs after losing their last match against Rollins in a 6-1 loss but winning their previous match in a 6-1 decision against Eckerd. The Sailfish will face No. 1 Nova Southeastern before their match with the Mocs. PBA won the doubles point to start strong against Rollins, but were unable to win any of the singles flights. Against the Tritons, the Sailfish had flight wins by Elvira Edstrom, Verena Weindl, Jelsy Croes, Anabelle Robichaud, and Frida Alsterhem.
  • #2 Barry host the Mocs after their initial match at the beginning of the season was postponed due to weather. Barry remains undefeated, including a 4-3 win over No. 1 Nova Southeastern last week for the Sharks first loss of the season. The Buccaneers enter ranked second in the nation as a team, after being bumped by Nova Southeastern in last week's ITA rankings poll. Barry continues to be led by Deniz Khazan, ranked number one in the nation for singles competition. The Bucs have three additional athletes in top 75 of singles rankings and two in top 10 of doubles pairings.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold a 17-3 record against PBA, with their last matchup a 5-1 win last year in Lakeland. Against the Bucs, Barry has a 32-3 record, winning the last 15 matches in a row against the Mocs, including last year's 7-0 win in Lakeland.

  • Florida Southern women's track will send competitors to compete in four different events over the two days of the Spikes Classic. On Friday, FSC will compete in the 1500m and 5,000m. On Saturday, the Mocs will take part in the 400m and 800m.
  • In the most recent meet, the Knights Invitational, junior Rebecca Ramsay continued to rewrite the short sprint record book at Florida Southern. She ran the seventh fastest 100m time in program history, her third top-10 time this season. Senior Alayna Goll led the Mocs in the 3000m while freshman Emma Mussante led the team in the 1500m
  • Mussante along with 10 other teammates will compete in the 1500m Friday afternoon including the return of Ellie Fluman who did not compete last weekend. Goll will lead a group of six competitors in the 5000m including two who will help pace the others to help secure a stronger time. On Saturday the lone woman in action will be Capri Procopio who will compete in both the 400m and 800m.
  • Florida Southern men's track will see action in three different events over the two days at Embry-Riddle. The Mocs will compete in the 1500m and 5000m Friday before taking on the 800m on Saturday.
  • Graduate student Mitchell Kozik broke the program record for the 3000m steeplechase at the most recent event for the Mocs, the Knights Invite. He posted a time of 9:18.45 which surpassed the previous record of 9:19.21 which he set last season at UNF. Graduate student Joshua Wagner posted the 10th fastest 1500m time as well at UCF. Junior Brady Zimmerman brought home an individual title at UCF as well as he won the 3000m on Saturday.
  • Kozik, Wagner and Zimmerman will all be in action Friday in the 1500m along with the return of Mason Jones who sat out last weekend's competition. They will be joined by six others for a total of 10 FSC competitors in the event. Six others will compete in the 5000m including Caden Kwiatkowski and James Simpson among others. Ten Mocs will return on Saturday to compete in the 800m including Jones, Kozik, Wagner, Simpson and Kwiatkowski.

  • Florida Southern travels to Winter Park after a great series win over Florida Tech, registering votes in the NCBWA poll at the time. After an initial 10-7 loss in the first game, the Mocs swept the doubleheader for a 2-1 series win over the Panthers. Jeff Liquori shined over the weekend, with three home runs on the week, including consecutive at-bat homers in the second game of the doubleheader. Duncan Hunter had a two-run over in game one with a 2 RBI double later that game for a great series as well.
  • With three home runs last week, Liquori stays in second in the conference for home runs hit, with 11 on the season so far. Hunter sits tied for third with eight homers on the season. Liquori's deep ball has pushed him to second in slugging percentage and OPS in the conference, with a .369 batting average one of the best on the team. Nathan Chevalier continues to perform great at the plate, just behind first in the conference with a .404 batting average on the season.
  • On the mound, the Mocs continue to rotate pitching responsibilities with Dawson Lane seeing time as a starter and Ryan Langford adding to his pitch count. Aric McAtee got a win over the weekend and leads the team with 39.1 innings pitched and a 5.49 ERA. Nathan Madej will see time this weekend as he has a 4.56 ERA so far this season on 25.2 innings pitched. As a team, the Mocs all an average of 5.00 ERA and .278 opposing batting average.
  • #9 Rollins host the Mocs after losing their last tow games in a row during a three-game series against Saint Leo. The Tars won game one in an 8-1 decision, before losing the next two in close games. Rollins controlled game one after five straight scoreless innings led to a four run sixth inning for the Tars. Rollins comeback in game two fell short, as did a game three which they had the lead to the top of the eighth, but gave up a three-run homer for the Lions to win the game.
  • The Tars have four starters that are batting over .300 as Jeslyn Whitehead, Joey Rubin, Chase Achuff, and Adams Torres led the team. As a team, they are batting .289 at the plate. With 11 doubles on the season, Achuff sits in second in the conference and Nick Santucci is tied for third in the conference with eight homers on the season so far. On the mound, the Tars are led by Whitehead, Austin Long, and Justin Alintoff, who each hold the top three spots in the conference with an ERA less than two. Whitehead leads the team and conference with an 0.89 ERA on 50.2 innings pitched.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs have a strong 152-79 advantage over the Tars throughout their history dating back to 1957. The last matchup came on March 28, 2021 which the Tars rallied for a 6-5 win in Lakeland. While in Winter Park, the Mocs still hold a 66-45 advantage.

  • Florida Southern is looking to bounce back after two SSC losses over the past weekend. The Mocs traveled to Melbourne, Fla. over the weekend but will return home for another conference series. FSC opened the series against Florida Tech with a 4-3 win, but fell in the doubleheader.
  • In conference play the Mocs have received two wins as both were on the series opener; first against Eckerd and second win against the Panthers over this past weekend. FSC are currently sitting fourth in the SSC with a batting average .273 but unfortunately are last in the conference in pitching with a 5.84 ERA. Jadin Dewith moved from first to third in conference play with hitting, supporting a .410 batting average going 16-for-39 with six runs scored, one double, and an RBI. Skyler Ralstin and Destiny Colgate are in the top 15 in the conference with a .370 average and .359 being two of the three Mocs with a homer on the season.
  • On the season, seniors Myah Moy and Jadin Dewith continue to lead the way. Both have started in every game for FSC up till this point as Dewith is 33-for-91 on the season followed by Moy going 33-for-89 with a .363 batting average and .371.
  • Rollins is currently supporting an 18-5 overall record and sits first in the SSC with a 9-3 along with three other schools. The Tars are currently on a five game win streak where their last five wins were conference opponents. Prior to the two wins the Mocs fell to SSC foe PBA in the series 2-1 with the loss being a 2-4 decision at home for Rollins.
  • In the SSC, the Tars are currently third in batting a ..280. They have 89 hits, the sixth most in conference play. They have the most home runs with 12 on the year and second highest in doubles with 18, and 51 RBIs. Jaden Walker leads Rollins with a .417 batting average to come in just ahead of Dewith in the conference.
  • On the season, Grace Germer is batting a .366 with 15 hits, 12 runs, a double, and one RBI. Chelsea Peace is close behind batting a .353 starting in every game for the Tars. Peace leads with 24 hits on the year, with five doubles, seven homers, and bringing in 15 runners. Rollins only has three pitchers on the season, as they are led by Ashley Worrell with a 1.50 ERA and is 8-3 on the year. Worrell is tied with Emily MacMullen pitching seven complete games and is 9-1 on the year. MacMullen has a 1.53 ERA. Both pitchers have two saves on the season while Worrell has struck out 72 batters followed by MacMullen with 55.
  • HISTORY: In the past 127 meetings the Mocs have 88 wins but are currently on a seven game losing streak. The Mocs have held a 54 game win streak against the Tars from March of 1985 to April of 1998.

  • Florida Southern is having a spectacular season thus far as the Mocs honored the seniors last weekend during their final home tri-match of the season. The Mocs took four matches from Eckerd over the weekend before falling to Palm Beach. The No. 1 seed of Erica Ronda/ Kennedy Mathews defeated the Tritons in straight sets of 21-14. The No.2 pair of Celia-Rae Greco and Haley Goodrich went to three sets winning 22-24, 21-15, 16-14, followed by No. 3 pair Sarah Crocker and Olivia D'Agostino in 21-11 straight sets. The No. 5 pair of Hayley St. Martin and Curry Ward saw their first loss this season.
  • On the season, the pair of Martin and Ward led the way with 18 total wins followed by Crocker and D'Agostino with 17, Knoop and Jones with 12.
  • Tampa The Mocs played Tampa earlier in the season falling to the Spartans 4-1 as the No. 5 pairing received the only win for FSC. Tampa was on a four game losing streak until defeating Louisiana Monroe during the LSU Beach Invitational over the weekend 3-2.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic was on a losing streak after competing in a D1 tournament the previous weekend. The Sailfish later went on to defeat both FSC and Eckerd during last weekend's tri-match winning all matches.

  • #13 Florida Southern has won three-straight heading into Saturday's contest versus Embry-Riddle. The Mocs most recently defeated Frostburg State 16-10 to complete the non-conference portion of their schedule. Saturday also marks just the second Sunshine State Conference game of the season for Florida Southern as the Mocs defeated Lynn 19-14 earlier this season.
  • Junior Jeff Atlas continues to lead the team in points and assists while ranking second in goals. He has 25 goals, 29 assists and 54 points through 10 games this season. He currently ranks first in the Sunshine State Conference in assists per game (2.90), third in points per game (5.40) and eighth in goals per game (2.50). Junior Sean Nolan leads the team in goals with 29 while ranking third in the conference in goals per game with 2.90.
  • Senior Kevin Horwitz continues to give the Mocs an advantage at the X as he has won 71.3 percent of his face offs (191-268) this season including a 74.5 percent clip (143-192) in Florida Southern victories. He currently has 109 ground balls this season and ranks second in the SSC in ground balls per game (10.90) while leading the conference in face off winning percentage (.713).
  • The fifth-year senior continues to re-write the Florida Southern record book as he holds both the career records for ground balls (381) and face offs won (753). He has also already broken the single season ground balls record in 2022 with his 109. He surpassed Dan Krispinsky (2011-14) who had 90 ground balls during the 2013 season. He is also just eight face off victories away from tying the single season mark at FSC. Andrew Fisher (2014-15) won 199 face offs in 2015 to sit atop the rankings but Horwitz is close behind with 191 so far this season with six regular season games left on the schedule.
  • Horwitz also picked up his fifth SSC Specialist of the Week honor in his career this past week and fourth of the 2022 season. Matt Lalli (2014-17) holds the distinction as the most decorated player in program history in terms of weekly honors as he brought home eight honors during his four-year career, all Defensive Player of the Week.
  • In goal for the Mocs, junior Maxwell Freestone continues to hold the starting spot. He now has a 5-2 record in between the pipes with 71 saves over eight appearances and an 11.10 goals against average. He also has a .504 save percentage.
  • Embry-Riddle is 3-8 this season with wins over Flagler, Montevallo and Emmanuel. The Eagles have dropped four-straight heading into Saturday's contest including a 13-7 defeat at the hands of then 12th-ranked Rollins this past Saturday.
  • Redshirt sophomore Coleman Jacobs leads the Eagles in both goals and points this season. He has scored 28 goals through 11 games while handing out nine assists for a point total of 37. Redshirt freshman Marcus Needham leads the team with 14 assists while fellow redshirt freshman Christian Hofer ranks second on the squad in goals with 19. Redshirt junior Mark Urso and freshman Andrew Ewalt have been handling the faceoffs for the Eagles. Urso is 80-145 (.552) while Ewalt is 58-97 (.598). Redshort sophomore Lucas Fraser has started every game in goal for the Eagles. He has an 11.23 goals against average and has stopped 125 shots this season with a .504 save percentage.
  • HISTORY: Saturday will mark just the third meeting between the Eagles and Mocs. Florida Southern has won the previous two meetings 15-3 in 2018 and 25-16 in 2019.

  • Florida Southern continued their winning home streak with a 5-2 win over Montevallo last week. The Mocs were led in doubles by the No. 40 pairing of Valentin Hertweck and Chris Fok Kow who won their match in a 7-5 flight win. Matteo Feggi and Erik Nordblom continued a great season with a flight win and secured the doubles point for the Mocs. In singles, the Mocs had wins by No. 42 Hertweck, Fok Kow, Nordblom, and Feggi. Currently ranked No. 31 in the ITA poll, the Mocs look for a big conference win over equally ranked PBA.
  • Palm Beach Atlantic will host the Mocs as the No. 32 team in the nation despite two straight loses. Both loses came against top 10 teams with a 7-0 loss to No. 2 Barry and No. 10 Flagler. Their last win came with a 7-0 victory over Eckerd College. In singles competition, the Sailfish are led by No. 51 Jorge Santamaria.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold a 14-3 overall record advantage against PBA, with the last match a 5-2 win at home last March. The Mocs were ranked No. 12 in the nation at the time.

  • No. 6 Florida Southern travels to Boca Raton as the third road game of the season and on a seven-game win streak. The Moccasins open Sunshine State Conference play with an 8-1 record after a pair of victories in Ohio, 15-10 vs no. 17 Roberts Wesleyan (neutral site) and 18-7 against Tiffin.
  • On the season, Abby McFerren is the team leader with 36 points, 21 goals 15 assists, ahead of Hailey Daleo at 34. Daleo stands as the team leader in scoring with 25 goals. Lizzy Lynch is third on the team in points with 27 on 14 goals and 13 assists.
  • In goal, Patricia Werker has seen the most minutes (287:09), shots faced (136) and has 46 saves with a 4-1 record. Brittany Iamele is 4-0 in 195:50 minutes played with 24 saves on 61 shots faced.
  • Lynn was receiving votes in the latest ILWomen/IWLCA DII Poll where the Fighting Knights are 9-2, 0-1 in SSC play. Lynn fell 18-9 at Saint Leo on March 26 to open SSC play a week ahead of the Mocs.
  • On the season, Isabella Clark is the team leader in points at 54, with a best 32 assists while adding 22 goals. The front heavy attack is led by Kristyn Johnson with 38 goals, just ahead of Sydney Hill with 32. Both Danielle Farinas and Clark are over 20 goals apiece, 25 and 22, respectively.
  • In goal, Ciara Moorman has seen 375 minutes with 47 saves, ahead of Carolyn Stein's 285 minutes and 27 saves.
  • History Florida Southern is 2-0 all-time against Lynn, both wins coming in 2021. The last matchup, a 21-5 decision in favor of the Mocs on April 28, saw Hailey Daleo score nine goals en route to setting the program single game scoring record, besting the eight goal performances by Kendall Kerge (two times) from 2016 and 2017.

  • No. 21 Florida Southern returns to the links after a week off and placing sixth at the BarryU Women's Invitational where Loren Perez placed third carding a three-over for the 54-hole event. Perez led a trio of golfers that finished inside the top-25 of the event.
  • On the season, the Mocs have four sixth place finishes as a team, two fifth place finishes, a seventh place finish and a second place finish which came at the Saint Leo Invitational on Oct. 18-19 with Loren Perez finishing in fifth, and Lacey Tucker in eighth.
  • The Mocs will close out the regular season with the Lynn Invitational before looking to the Sunshine State Conference Championships April 10-12 in Ormond Beach, Fla.
  • At the 2021 Lynn Invitational, Florida Southern placed sixth as a team where Perez led the Mocs with a 10th place individual finish.

  • No. 13 Florida Southern returns to the links after a week off following a third place finish at the Bobcat Invitational in Eataton, Ga. at Cuscowilla on Lake Oconee with an 851 (+11). The Mocs carded a round best score of 279 over the final 18 to jump to third place as a team. Adam Alvarez used back-to-back 68's to close the tournament to take second place, going toe-to-toe with the no. 3 Division II golfer, A.J Ewart (Barry) for first place.
  • On the season, the Mocs have placed in the top-10 at six events, with five top-5 finishes including two second place tournaments with the Matlock Collegiate and the Las Vegas Desert Classic this spring.
  • The Mocs close the regular season with the Battle at the Shores hosted by Barry University at the Normandy Shores Golf Club in Miami Beach, Fla. before hosting the Sunshine State Conference Championships April 10-12 at Grasslands Golf and Country Club.
  • This will be the first appearance for the Mocs at the Battle of the Shores since the 2018 season in which FSC took home the team title out of the 18-team field at 13-under. A pair of All-American Moccasins went head-to-head for the individual title that saw John VanDerLaan win in a playoff against John Coultas.
