Mocs Minutes: Several Teams in Action at Home to Open Spring Break

  • Florida Southern men's track opened the 2022 season two weekends ago at the UT Track Classic. One school record fell while several strong performances highlighted the evening meet.
  • Senior Mason Jones led the Mocs in their opening meet as he set a new 3,000m record as he surpassed the previous mark by nearly four seconds. Jones led a group of 13 Moccasins in the 3,000m as he topped the 54-member field with a school record time of 8:24.24. The mark surpassed teammate and graduate student Joshua Wagner who had the previous record of 8:28.19 which he ran last season at Embry-Riddle. Wagner earned a second place finish in 1,500m as well as a fourth place finish in the 3,000m during the opening meet as well.
  • Florida Southern women's track also picked up a school record in the 3,000m at the UT Track Classic in the season opener while several all-time top-10 times were set including a freshman record.
  • Sophomore Ellie Fluman led the way with a school record in the 3,000m as she finished seventh overall with a time of 10:18.43. The time surpassed Ysabella Guerra's (2018-21) record of 10:21.85. Fluman led a group of eight Mocs in the event. Freshman Emma Mussante crossed the finish line next for the Mocs as she set a freshman record for the program after stopping the watch at 10:27.06 which placed her 11th. The time also ranks as the fourth fastest 3,000m time in program history. Freshman Marisa Kortright also surpassed the previous freshman record in the event as she turned in the 11th fastest time ever in program history at 10:31.86 while finishing 14th.
  • Junior Rebecca Ramsay picked up the lone individual victory on the night as she topped the field in the 100m with a blazing time of 13.53 which ranks fourth in the all-time records for the Mocs. Sophomore Capri Procopio also turned in the sixth fastest 200m time in program history as she placed seventh in the event in a time of 27.68.

  • Florida Southern continues their home stand against Winona State after a 2-0 series win over Kentucky Wesleyan on Monday and Tuesday. The Mocs had six home runs and an overall 21-6 score over the two games against the Panthers. Game one tied Florida Southern's runs scored on the season with 13 with home runs by Duncan Hunter, Connor Berry, and Jeff Liquori. Game two was an 8-2 win as Fitts added a homer in the fifth. The next inning Liquori and Nathan Chevalier went back-to-back from deep for the first time since April of last year. Hunter extended his hit streak to a team-high 13 games while Florida Southern had great success on the mound with 24 total strikeouts in the series.
  • The Mocs are led by Liquori with a .373 batting average in 15 games with Hunter right behind batting .339 and a team-high 17 RBI. Liquori leads the team with seven homers on the season. Going back to last year, the Moccasins have hit at least one homer in 35 of the last 41 games. FSC is batting .279 as a team with 24 homers on the season and outscoring opponents 101-78.
  • On the mound the Mocs have a staff ERA of 4.23 with 114 strikeouts (including 25 in the Kentucky Wesleyan series) and 54 walks. The SSC named Nathan Madej Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season after his 5.0 inning shoutout against Barry last week. Dawson Lane continues to shine as he has yet to allow an opponent to score in his last seven appearances.
  • Winona State tallied their first win of the season with a 9-6 win over Findlay Thursday afternoon. After an early 3-0 lead, the Warriors held off late scores by the Oilers to earn their first win. Winona State was led by Nick Herbst who had a 4x6 outing and Derek Baumgartner, who had two home runs and four RBI in the win.
  • On the mound, the Warriors have Nicolas Herold with a 7.04 ERA in five appearances and 7.2 innings pitched. Starting rotation consists of Bailey Banaszynski, Cameron Kramer, and Dillon Whittaker. As a team, Winona State has given up 39 runs on 54 hits.
  • Augustana travels to Lakeland after a lengthy stint with no games. Their last game was on February 13th with a 6-5 win over No. 3 Central Missouri. Registering votes in the latest NCBWA poll, the Vikings have four athletes batting over .300 in their three games. Carter Howell leads the team with a .385 batting average and JT Mix with a team-high five RBI and four hits. Augustana is seven-for-nine in stolen bases.
  • On the mound, the Vikings have several players with scoreless innings over the three-game stint. Starters Tanner Brown, Ryan Jares, and Jed Schmidt have pitched a combined 13.2 innings with 14 hits allowed. Augustana pitchers have not allowed a deep ball to start the season.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold an 8-1 overall record when taking on Winona State. After losing their first meeting in 2008, Florida Southern has won the last eight meetings, including a 3-2 victory in 2020. I The only meeting between Florida Southern and Augustana was the 2018 NCAA College World Series, when the Vikings won a close 6-5 game, as the Mocs took third.

  • No. 6 Florida Southern looks to host Findlay and No. 19 Mount Olive this weekend after falling to no. 3 Queens Sunday 12-9. The Moccasins rallied late to close to within one but couldn't fend off the Royals push in the fourth quarter. In the setback, Abby McFerren and Brenna Smith paced the team in goals with two apiece while McFerren was the team leader in points, adding one assist.
  • On the season the Mocs average 14 goals a game after scoring 19 in the season opener against then-no. 23 Saint Leo and nine against no. 3 Queens. Smith is the leader through two games with seven goals while Lizzy Lynch, the team leader in points (9) is tied with Hailey Daleo with five goals apiece. Daleo and Smith are second to Lynch in total points with five while McFerren is close behind with five points on four goals and one assist.
  • In goal, Patricia Werker has seen all 120 minutes for the Mocs and has 18 saves (.419 save percentage) through the two games against nationally ranked opponents. She stands at 1-1 this season.
  • Findlay dropped their first game of the season on Wednesday to Florida Tech, 19-8. The Ohio team saw their original season opener get canceled on Feb. 26 against UIndy. In the loss to the Panthers, three players scored two goals each in Allie Kasprzyk, Danielle Dilorenzo, and Izzy Murphy-Morrow.
  • On the young season, the Oilers are led by the trio of Kaspryzk, Dilorenzo, and Murphy-Morrow with two goals while Kaspryzk and Murphy-Morrow are the team leaders in points with three.
  • In goal Rachel Bornstein has seen 60 minutes of action and has seven saves on the season with an 0-1 record.
  • No. 19 Mount Olive will take on Saint Leo on Friday night before traveling to Lakeland for a matchup with Florida Southern. The Trojans are 2-1 entering the road trip to Florida and are coming off a 14-13 win over the University of Alabama in Huntsville on Feb. 26. UMO tallied the overtime goal to steal the 14-13 win.
  • On the season, Meaghan Michaud leads the Trojans with four goals while she is the team leader with six points adding two assists to her season tally. Meagan Maxwell is second on the team in points (5) and goals (2) while she holds the team lead for assists with three.
  • In goal, Micayla Starnes and Claire Hagen have split time where Starnes is 1-0 with nearly 50 minutes of action with five saves. Hagen has started two of the three games and has played in 148 minutes with 24 saves on the season.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern is 1-0 against Findlay with the lone meeting coming back on April 14, 2019 when the Mocs defeated the Oilers 19-5. Against Mount Olive, Florida Southern is 4-0 with a 3-0 mark at home. This marks the third time both programs have been ranked in the meeting.

  • Florida Southern continues their home stand after a 7-0 sweeping win over the University of Findlay Wednesday afternoon. The Mocs won their doubles point and won all of their flights. Four of the flights won in two sets with Erik Norblom and Elliott Altman outlasting their Oilers opponents in the tiebreaker third set. Matteo Feggi continued a great run and start as a Moccasin with another two-set win. Oscar Sohl, Valentin Hertweck, and Chris Fok Kow were the other singles flight winners.
  • Auburn Montgomery enters ranked 23rd in the latest ITA Division II poll and a 7-0 win over Shorter last Friday. They won each of the singles flights in two sets, leaving Shorter with no set wins. Their previous loses on the season were to Flagler College in a 7-0 loss, and a 7-0 loss to No. 2 Columbus State University. Auburn Montgomery had an exhibition match against VCU in the season as well. The Warhawks will take on No. 9 Saint Leo this afternoon before their match against the Mocs.
  • Charleston continues their spring break tour of Florida after a 7-0 win over Piedmont University yesterday afternoon. The undefeated Charleston crew won their match last week against Mercyhurst University in a 6-1 decision with Drew Dagostine leading the Golden Eagles. Charleston faces Davenport and Northwood University before their match with Florida Southern.
  • Northwood travels to Florida for their spring break tour after a 4-3 loss to Hillsdale last week. The last win by the Timberwolves was a 6-1 win over Aquinas where Leon Grundstrom, Maharsh Patel, Mathis Violet, and Max Wild went 2-0 on the day. Northwood faces Flagler on Sunday before their Tuesday match against Florida Southern.
  • Lynn will take on the Mocs Wednesday after their last match was postponed due to weather conditions. The Fighting Knights remain undefeated on the season with their last win in a 6-1 score over Palm Beach Atlantic. Ranked third in the latest ITA poll, the Fighting Knights won 2-of-3 doubles points with Lucca Baptista, Dan Kaplun, Ignacio Martinez, Will Kirkman, and Gianmarco Amatiste winners of their flights.

  • Florida Southern has started off undefeated this season defeating Lake Sumter Community College back on February 9. It has been almost an entire month since the Mocs have competed against another school so they are anxious to get back into competition.
  • On the season, the Mocs are being led by seniors, Haley Goodrich and Kennedy Mathews who defeated Lake Sumter 21-13, 21-16 and took down the Lake Hawks again with a second time in three sets with a score of 21-15, 17-21, 15-9.
  • All teams have started out undefeated as Celia-Rae Greco and Erica Ronda are 2-0, along with Abby Knoop and Bethany Jones, Sarah Crocker and Olivia D'Agostino, and Hayley St. Martin and Curry Ward.
  • State College of Floridahave started out their season with a 2-4 start. The Manatees started the season in January with two tough losses to Ave Maria falling 3-2 in both games. State College of Florida split with Webber International winning the first game 3-2 before falling in the finale 4-1. The Manatees also defeated Lake Sumter who the Mocs defeated earlier this season with a 3-2 win.
  • College of CharlestonFour pairs recorded a victory in the Cougars' 4-1 win over Mercer last weekend including a 21-10, 21-14 decision for the duo of Maria Zweig and Gabi Bailey in the fourth flight. Zweig and Ella Reames were unable to take advantage of a 1-0 lead in a 21-19, 16-21, 12-15 setback to South Carolina's third pairing. Rebeca Olariu and Jasmin Goei set the tone for the Cougars against Mercer with a 21-13, 21-9 win in the fifth flight. Reames and Kyra Thompson gave Florida Gulf Coast's three's everything they could handle in the season opener pushing the Eagles to three sets in a 15-21, 21-19, 15-17 decision.
  • Saint Leowill be competing in the Battle of the Bay this weekend facing Missouri State and College of Charleston. Prior to this weekend the Lions went 1-1 at the Jacksonville Dolphin Duels where they won 5-0 but later fell 5-0.

  • Florida Southern takes a spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. after a 6-1 win at home against Bates College. Continuing their emphasis of the doubles competition point, the Mocs swept the three flights in doubles. Mathilda Vidgren won her flight in a 6-1, 6-0 decision, as well as Minnie Kim and Maxima Ellenberg winning both sets. Olivia Bryant won her flight after a 6-1, 6-0 score with Vivien Charvatova in a great set one win and battle for a set two win.
  • Savannah State travel after a close loss to Albany State University last week in a 4-2 score. One of the singles flights went unfinished with Albany State taking the match-deciding point. Pairing of Amarlia Benn and Gabrielle Benn won a doubles slight, but unable to tally another win as the point wen to Albany State. Both G. Been and A. Benn won their flights, with Caitlyn Shultz adding the last Tigers point.
  • Davis & Elkins has yet to start their season and will travel to Hilton Head for their first match of the season against Florida Southern. Last year the Senators had Taylour Newman lead the team with a First Team All-MEC selection. She went 6-2 in singles play with a 7-1 doubles record in the shortened 2021 season.
  • Lewis travels after a 6-1 win over Walsh last week and a 6-1 loss at Tiffin for their 4-2 record. The sole point by the Flyers in their match against Tiffin was a third set tiebreaker by Anastasiya Salenko for a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 decision. In their win over Walsh, the Flyers won each of the singles flights, but dropped the doubles point with wins by Nefeli Zafeiri, Jovana Vujanic, Casey Smith, Joie Reisch, and Sage Hills.
  • Ashland enters with a 1-2 record, having lost their last two matches. A win over Franciscan on October 9th in fall play was their last win, as the first two matches of the spring season was a loss to Northwood and Slippery Rock. The Eagles will face Longwood on Saturday before their spring tennisfest match against Florida Southern.
  • Northwood has a 5-2 overall record with their only loses to Eastern Michigan and Findlay two weeks ago. The Timberwolves have won their last two matches with a 7-0 win over Aquinas and a 4-3 nailbiter against Hillsdale. Northwood was swept in the doubles competition but rebounded to tally four singles flight wins and the match. Winners included Elizaveta Velichko, Rafaella Platsiota, Rafaella Fulop, and Ekaterina Vorobeva.

  • Florida Southern returns to action after placing second at the Matlock Collegiate back on Feb. 7-8. As a team, the Moccasins fired off a three-round total of 850 (-14) to finish three strokes off no. 1 Barry.
  • Sam Rogers paced the team with a third place finish at five-under 211. Rogers fired off the low round of the day, 67, to fly up the leaderboard after the opening two rounds of 70 and 74. Noah Kumar was second on the team in eighth place, 214 (-2).
  • Joining Rogers and Kumar at the home tournament were Clay Tucker, Johnny Tucker, and Adam Alvarez who all finished tied for 14th at even-par.

  • #16 Florida Southern hit the road this past Saturday and picked up its fourth win of the season, all 20-plus goal performances for the Moccasins. FSC defeated Flagler 22-4 to set a new school record for most games with 20-plus goals in a season at four.
  • Junior Jeff Atlas took home his third Sunshine State Conference Offensive Player of the Week honor for his performances at Flagler. He scored six goals and handed out four assists for a 10-point performance. His third OPOW honor ties him with Dane Sorensen (2012-15) and Matt Lalli (2014-17) for the most weekly awards in a single season by a Moccasin in program history. Atlas also became the first FSC men's lacrosse player to reach 100 career assists as he adds to his career record total.
  • Junior Sean Nolan surpassed 100 career goals becoming the fourth Moc in program history to do so. Nolan along with sophomore Thomas Frank lead the team with 20 goals each on the season. Atlas leads the squad in assists with 22 and points with 39. Senior Kevin Horwitz continues to lead the team in face offs and ground balls. He has won 114 if 155 face offs and has 73 ground balls.
  • #13 Lindenwood is 1-1 on the season with a 20-8 victory at home versus Rockhurst and a 13-8 loss on the road at Limestone, the same Limestone squad the Mocs fell to 12-11 earlier this season. The Lions are 26-9 over the last four seasons including going 10-3 in 2021.
  • Graduate student Patrick Kaschalk leads the Lions in both goals (8) and points (11) through two games while freshman Dylan Colon paces the squad with six assists. Junior Jony Major and senior Michael Miocic have split time at the X. Major has won 19 of 33 face offs while Miocic is 10 of 23. Graduate student Kyle Hebert and junior Blake Nolan have split time in goal with each seeing 60 minutes of action. Nolan has taken both decisions at 1-1 while Hebert leads in goals against average at 7.00 and saves with 14.
  • HISTORY: This Monday will mark the third meeting between the Mocs and Lions all-time. Florida Southern holds a 2-0 record versus Lindenwood with a 12-8 victory in 2011 and a 14-12 win in 2013. Both games took place in Lakeland.
