  • Meet: Abbey Invitational
  • Date | Times: Sept. 24, 2022 | 7:25 AM (M) / 8:00 AM (W)
  • Location: Saint Leo, Fla. | Abbey Golf Course
  • Florida Southern cross country heads to the Abbey Invitational Saturday morning in Saint Leo, Fla. The men will take to the course first as they compete in an 8K beginning at 7:25 a.m. The women's race will begin at 8 a.m. as the Mocs take on the 5K course.
  • The Florida Southern men return to competition after a strong opening performance at the Eastern Florida State College Fall Classic. Junior Owen Allen made his return to competition after not seeing any action over the past two seasons to lead the Mocs while two newcomers, Christian Giller and Anthony Matthew, made their collegiate debuts and finished second and third on the FSC roster while posting top-10 finishes overall. Familiar faces including junior Bryson Yamnitz and senior Alex Guy rounded out the top-five finishers for the Mocs in the season debut.
  • The last time the Moccasins competed on the Abbey Golf Course as a team was at the 2021 NCAA South Region Championships where the Mocs took fifth overall. Yamnitz and Guy finished fourth and fifth on the team that day while posting top-40 individual finishes. Senior Brady Zimmerman also competed in the race and finished one spot outside the top-five for FSC. The Mocs will send a group of 14 to compete at this year's event including newcomers Giller, Matthew, freshmen Caleb Brady and Chris Colavita, and senior transfer Billy Adams.
  • The Florida Southern women focused on team tactics during the opening meet at Eastern Florida State College and will not send their top-seven finishers from the opening meet to the Abbey Invitational. Despite not going full out, the Mocs still produced five top-10 finishers at the meet. FSC will send a smaller contingent to Saint Leo as the top-seven Mocs continue to prepare for the strong competition at the Royals Cross Country Challenge scheduled for Oct. 7 in Charlotte, N.C.
  • Freshmen Caitlin Beery and Madison Thomas, sophomores Chloe Hacker, Karah McElhone, Emily Opalinski and Julia Svartstrom and junior Kaylee Padar will represent the Mocs at the Abbey Invitational. Svartstrom had the top individual finish among the group at the opening meet as she took 19th overall at the EFSC Fall Invitational. Svartstrom was also the only one of the group to compete at last season's NCAA South Region Championship hosted on the Abbey Golf Course.

  • Location: Lakeland, Fla. | George W. Jenkins Field House

  • Florida Southern continues its homestand this Saturday as the Mocs welcome in Lynn for another Sunshine State Conference match-up. Florida Southern is coming off a 3-1 victory over No. 25 Nova Southeastern and are riding a three-match win streak.
  • Junior Mackenzie Petermann continues to lead the Mocs offensively with 3.71 kills per set which ranks her fifth in the SSC so far this season. Senior Ali Travis (2.83) and graduate student Emma Shaddix (2.10) rank second and third on the team, respectively, and are each averaging over 2.10 kills per set this season. Senior Mika Garza and junior Cassidy Markel continue to run the offense from the setter position and are averaging 9.68 and 4.29 assists per set, respectively. Garza currently ranks fifth in the SSC in assists per set. Garza and Travis lead a potent serving attack as they each have 16 service aces this season. Freshman Morgan Word sits right behind the pair with 12 aces.
  • Graduate student libero Beatrice Formilan is the reigning Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week. She leads the backline for the Mocs and is averaging 4.63 digs per set this season to rank fourth in the SSC. At the net it's sophomore Madison Fowler leading the way with 32 total blocks. She is averaging 0.89 per set so far in 2022. Joining her in double-figures are Shaddix (22), Word (17), Gilic (16) and Petermann (13). The Mocs as a team posted 15 blocks in the victory over No. 25 Nova Southeastern. The 15 total blocks were the most for Florida Southern since Oct. 28, 2017 when FSC posted 17 blocks in a 3-2 win over Lynn. The last time FSC had 15 or more blocks in a four set match came all the way back on Dec. 3, 2015 when the Mocs had 16 blocks versus North Alabama in the first round of the NCAA South Region Championship.
  • Lynn is coming off its biggest win of the season so far as the Fighting Knights defeated No. 16 Barry on the road this past Tuesday 3-0. It marked the first loss for this season. Lynn has won two-straight matches including the sweep of No. 16 Barry on the road and a 3-0 sweep of Eckerd at home. Lynn's two SSC losses came at home against Tampa (3-1) and on the road at Nova Southeastern (3-2).
  • Senior Paige Barash leads the Fighting Knights offense with 3.76 kills per set. She is joined by senior Nadia Lindner (3.26) and graduate student Monica Mazzoleni (2.79) as the three all average over 2.75 kills per set this season. Senior Emily Edwards has been running the offense at setter and is averaging 10.67 assists per set to rank fourth in the SSC. Four Fighting Knights have double-digit service aces led by graduate student Marin Black who has an SSC best 21 this season.
  • Defensively, Black leads the backline with 4.41 digs pert set to rank fifth in the SSC. At the net, five Fighting Knights have double-digit blocks led by Mazzoleni's 30. Both Edwards (26) and graduate student Kenidy Howard (22) have over 20 blocks so far this season.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs and Fighting Knights have met 48 times on the volleyball court with Florida Southern owning a 33-15 record over that span. The Fighting Knights have had the edge in the most recent match-ups, winning seven of the last 10 meetings including the past four meetings. The most recent victory for Florida Southern in the series came back on Oct. 13, 2018 at home as FSC won 3-1.
  • Opponent: Florida Tech
  • Date | Time: Sept. 24, 2022 | 7:00 PM
  • Location: Lakeland, Fla. |Berend Field
  • Records: Florida Southern 4-1-3, 1-1-1 SSC | Florida Tech 4-2-1, 2-1-0 SSC
  • Florida Southern returns home after three straight road games. The Mocs last game they nearly upset the number two team in the nation, with a 1-1 tie against Embry-Riddle. Lindsey Meyer was the sole Moccasin goal scorer, her second straight game with a goal and second goal of the season. Meyer scored in the opening minutes of the game after a corner kick landed in a crowded box and Morgan Collica hit the pass for Meyer's goal. The Eagles scored in the first half as both teams battled through the 1-1 draw.
  • The Mocs continue to thrive in opening attacks and have scored in the first five minutes of the game in three of the last four matches. Caitlyn Lowery continues to lead the Mocs with five goals and three assists. Meyer's second goal Wednesday night joins six other Moccasins with two goals on the season and another two athletes with one goal. As a team, Florida Southern has 21 goals on the year, averaging 2.63 goals a game and over 100 shots. A distinct goal advantage over their opponent this weekend, shots on goal will be a key factor in another FSC conference win.
  • Keeper Jenny Staten got the start against top-ranked Embry-Riddle and only gave up one goal in the tie. Staten had two saves in the first half and faced just nine total shots by the Eagles. An overall team effort kept the Mocs in a tie and fantastic defense to keep the attack by FSC in the second half. A great offense paired with their strong defensive backline will be another point of emphasis against Florida Tech.
  • Florida Tech has won two straight conference games after dropping their first SSC matchup against Barry a couple of weeks ago. The Panthers beat Nova Southeastern last week 2-0 and had three goals in the first half of Wednesday night's game against Eckerd. Mayara Queiroz Reis scored twice in the game with a third goal by Cristina Garriga for the win. Eckerd scored once late by Reagan Rodriguez, but not enough to stage a comeback in the 3-1 Panthers win.
  • Garriga and Marem Ndiongue lead the Panthers offensively with three goals each on the season. Queiroz added the two goals against Eckerd and two more players have one goal on the season. Although Florida Tech does not score as many as FSC, the Panthers continue to add valuable shots in their games with a high shots-per-game average, just shy of FSC's. Goalie Maria Sanchez Recuero has 28 saves on the year in her six starts and has faced 68 shots. She has two shutouts this year and has a 0.71 goals against average.
  • HISTORY: These two teams have faced each other a number of times in their history, with Florida Tech the advantage on wins, 13-to-seven. There have been five ties in their matchups, an interesting point considering the three ties by Florida Southern already this year in a no-overtime era of the regular season. Last year, both teams battled through two overtimes and ended in a tie in Melbourne on Oct. 9. The last two meetings have resulted in a tie, and the last Moccasin win back in 2017 at home.
  • Opponent: #6 Florida Tech
  • Date | Time: Sept. 24, 2022 | 7:00 PM
  • Location: Melbourne, Fla. | Rick Stottler Field
  • Records: Florida Southern 2-3-2, 0-2-0 SSC | #6 Florida Tech 5-0-2, 2-0-1 SSC
  • Florida Southern took a little break from Sunshine State conference play on Tuesday evening as they hosted Atlantis University in an exhibition matchup where the Mocs got to a 5-0 win to start the week. Several Mocs saw a lot of playing time as they took down the Atlanteans as both Kyle Carr and Nick Dittmer scored two goals apiece in the win along with Braden Hill scoring one. FSC had two goalies to contribute in the shutout as Lasse Dettmer and Hunter Cole each played 45 minutes, but Cole would get the win with three saves.
  • In conference play, Henri Tophoven is the leading Moc thus far this season, tying the school record in goals scored in five consecutive matches. Southern has nine goals on the season with seven being from former United Soccer Coaches national player of the week. The other two goals come from junior Kyle Carr and sophomore Dino Leddie against Delta State during the Mocs opening weekend in Mississippi. Florida Southern has seven total Mocs with at least one assist in Felix Tonne (2), Victor Beker, Luca Bernoth, Leoluca Diefenbach, Sam Michaels, and Daniel Miranda.
  • The SSC has very tough competition as they always do but FSC will face the toughest and highest ranked team this weekend as they travel to face No.6 Florida Tech. In the conference, Henri is still at the top of the rankings with goal percentage, but has two close behind him a .857 average to Tophoven perfect 1.000 goal per game average.
  • No. 6 Florida Tech is coming off a 2-1 over SSC opponent Eckerd on Wednesday where they still have yet to see a loss thus far this season. They own a 5-0-2 record defeating RV Nova Southeastern 1-0 who is also in the SSC. The Panther scored late to tie the game and later the game winner against Eckerd to remain undefeated on the year.
  • On the year, graduate student Fabio Amaral and junior Ettore Casadei are leading the way for Florida Tech both scoring three goals thus far. Amaral is at the top of the leaderboard for the Panthers with 10 points for three goals and four assists. Collectively, FIT has 10 goals to their opponents four for 32 points to the other teams 12. Outside of Amaral and Casadei several Panthers have scored a solo goal in Jack Edwards, Jacopo Ghezzi, Joeran Osland, and Tom Windle.
  • In goal, Luis Tovar Romero Sr. is the only keeper to see action in all seven games playing 630 minus totaling 14 saves. Despite the Panthers high ranking in the United Soccer Coaches poll they are sitting toward the bottom half of the standing when just looking at the SSC standings. FIT is seventh in shots, goals, assists, eighth in saves, and last in total points; but is third in goals allowed.
  • HISTORY:This will be the 55th meeting between the two teams the last one falling in the Moccasins favor with a 2-1 win in Lakeland. Prior to that win the Panthers have taken the last four consecutively.
