Allen Leads Men’s Track in Inaugural Indoor Track Meet

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Southern men's and women's track programs took the next step in the programs evolution Friday afternoon as the two teams took part in the first meet of their inaugural indoor track season. Junior Owen Allen led the men's team as he won his indoor debut taking the 3,000m crown while sophomore Emma Mussante shined on the women's side taking third in the 3,000m.

TOP PERFORMERS
FLORIDA SOUTHERN MEN:
  • Junior Owen Allen put a stamp on the Moccasins' inaugural indoor track meet as he won the final event in which the team competed in as he took the 3,000m crown with a time of 8:32.16. Three others Mocs finished in the top-10 as junior Bryson Yamnitz took sixth in 8:47.16, followed by freshmen Christian Giller and Anthony Matthew. Giller nearly topped the FSC 3,000m freshman record as he completed the distance in 8:47.60 to place seventh while Matthew finished two spots back in ninth while clocking in at 8:56.19. Another freshman, Chris Colavita, nearly made it into the top-10 as he placed 11th after finishing in 8:59.34. The freshman streak continued as Orlando native Caleb Brady tool 13th in 9:00.95. The final two Moc finishers were sophomore Seth Augustynowski (15th, 9:05.07) and junior Luke Dickinson (21st, 9:26.12).   
  • Senior Alex Guy led the Moccasin contingent in the mile as he was the lone non-Division I runner in the top-10. Guy took seventh overall with a time of 4:14.53. Yamnitz was next to complete the distance as he placed 11th after stopping the clock at 4:21.63. Matthew (13th, 4:27.38) and Colavita (15th, 4:30.25) were the next two finishers for FSC while Augustynowski finished just outside the top-15 in 16th with a time of 4:30.96. The final four finishers for the Mocs were Brady (17th, 4:33.23), Giller (19th, 4:34.41), Dickinson (21st, 4:36.18) and sophomore Jaylen Caneus (32nd, 4:54.29).
  • Guy also led the way in the 800m as he took third overall finishing behind a pair of NCAA Division I runners from the University of North Florida. Guy completed the distance in 2:00.99. Caneus rounded out the top-15 as he placed 15th overall in 2:08.85.
 
FLORIDA SOUTHERN WOMEN:
  • Sophomore Emma Mussante led the women in their opening indoor meet as she took third in the 3,000m after clocking in at 10:38.14. Junior Ellie Fluman finished just one spot back in fourth as she finished just under six seconds behind at 10:44.12. Sophomores Karah McElhone and Mya Stam rounded out the top-10. McElhone took ninth at 11:00.74 while Stam placed 10th in 11:02.49. Junior Jinia Johnson just missed out on a top-10 finish as she took 11th overall after crossing the line in 11:08.74. The final Moccasin in the event was sophomore Emily Opalinski who took 13th overall in 11:59.66.
  • Senior Rebecca Ramsay took 23rd in the 200m as she sprinted to a 29.76 finish.
  • Freshman Caitlin Beery led the Mocs in the 800m as she took fourth overall in her first collegiate indoor meet. The Valrico, Fla. native posted a time of 2:25.13 in the event while finishing ahead of several NCAA Division I runners from USF, UCF, FIU and Bethune-Cookman. Junior Carolina Titus finished just outside the top-10 in 11th with a time if 2:32.21 while sophomore Julia Svartstrom placed 15th while crossing the line in 2:35.64.
 
UP NEXT:
The Moccasins will be back in action in Gainesville Jan. 26-27 to compete in the Alachua County Collegiate Invitational.
