LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 22 Florida Southern College men's tennis team defeated No. 16 Grand Valley State University by a score of 5-2 Friday afternoon at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
The Mocs (9-3) extended their win streak to six matches in a row in an incredible top-25 matchup. The Lakers drop to 8-4 overall on the season.
FSC outlasted the Lakers in doubles competition in a lengthy battle across the board.
Mario Garoz and
Ryan Rajakar opened with a win on #2 6-4, before the Lakers evened the score with a win on #3 against
Inaki Braun Simo and
Danny Thomas in a 7-5 loss. In a point-deciding court,
Chris Fok Kow and
Matteo Feggi, ranked eighth in doubles, beat No. 27 pairing of Gonzalez and Miller 7-5 for a point to the Mocs.
In singles, Garoz started with a big 6-0, 6-1 win at #3 as No. 56 Gonzalez beat Fok Kow at the #1 court 6-2, 6-2 and narrowed the Lakers' deficit.
John Gidefjord had a big win on #5 7-6 (7-2), 6-0 before GVSU responded with a win over
Alex Fascio at #4 court. The match-winning court went to Braun Simo who won back-to-back sets after dropping the first set. Mocs wrapped up with
Elliott Altman a win in three sets at #6 court.
Mocs will continue their homestand with a match tomorrow, March 11, against Southern New Hampshire, set for a 12 p.m. start at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
