OCALA, Fla. – The No. 14 Florida Southern College men's swimming team finished third overall at the end of the Sunshine State Conference Championships Sunday night at the F.A.S.T. Center.
The Mocs finished third overall with 543 points, a spot held for most of the week. The University of Tampa won the men's team championship with 854 points and Nova Southeastern University in second with 659 points.
The evening was highlighted by a second-place finish by
Kyle Micallef in the 100 free with a time of 43.64 (B standard). Micallef had the best FSC finish of the night.
John Zeiger took part in the B final of the 100 free tonight and finished sixth in his heat with a B standard time of 45.11. In the mile swim,
Peter Csicsaky (15:57.37) finished just ahead of teammate
Thomas Wooldridge (15:58.33) as each had top six times.
Clyde Crouse wrapped up the FSC showing in the 1650 free with a time of 16:22.09.
For the 200 back,
Brandon Wilson took part in the A final and finished sixth with a B standard time of 1:47.32.
William Eriksson swam in the consolation final with a time of 1:53.09. Two Moccasins took part in the 200 breast A final as
Ludwig Mueller led FSC with a sixth-place finish of 2:00.00.
Walter Christman was eighth in the A final with a time of 2:04.18. In the B final,
Nicko Peristeridis won the consolation final with a time of 2:03.84 and
Boris Mitev was fourth in the heat with a time of 2:04.55. A false start left FSC's A final without time to beat as FSC ended with a solid third-place finish for the second year in a row.
In prelims, Micallef also had the second-best time with a 44.48 morning time. Zeiger made the B final with a time of 45.19 as
Nino Viallon was just outside an evening invite with a time of 45.42, as was
Cameron Lai-Harris in 45.61. Wilson completed the morning prelims with a 200 back time of 1:48.47 and Eriksson 1:53.68. The 200 breast morning heats went well for FSC with Mueller second in the morning heat with a 2:00.69 time and Christman seventh in 2:02.67. Outside of the evening finals was
Travis Oleson in 2:07.28 and
Niko Frese with 2:07.82, each top-20 for the morning session.
Florida Southern ended the conference championships with two individual SSC titles and three relay titles. Micallef won the 50 free on Thursday night and Wilson the 100-back title-winner in Saturday's events. FSC had a team win the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, and the 200 free relay for three consecutive relay wins over the week's events. Several Moccasins had B standard times for a strong push for many NCAA qualifiers in next month's national stage.
The Mocs will await the announcement of championship selections and seeding on Wednesday, February 28
th. NCAA Championships take place Tuesday, March 12th - Saturday, March 16th at the SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
