Matthew Establishes New Program Record in the Mile

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida Southern College men's track team closed out its final indoor meet of the season at the Alachua County Sports Complex at Celebration Pointe as part of the Celebration Pointe Classic. Sophomore Anthony Matthew led the way Saturday as he took third overall in the mile while establishing a new program record in the event.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • Sophomore Anthony Matthew led a quartet of Moccasins in the mile as he took third overall after crossing the line in a new school record time of 4:09.75. Finishing 12 spots back and with the 10th best time in program history was junior Aiden Redmond who stopped the clock at 4:22.54 to take 15th in the race. Juniors Seth Augustynowski and James Simpson finished back-to-back in 21st and 22nd, respectively. Augustynowksi crossed the line in 4:30.02 while Simpson stopped the clock at 4:33.55.
  • The only other event in which the Mocs competed was the 5,000m where freshman Cole Summers posted the seventh-best time in program history while finishing eighth overall. Summers crossed the finish in 15:03.86. Fellow freshman William Canales finished six spots back in 14th while clocking in at 15:19.47. The parade of freshmen continued as Dylan Bailey took 18th overall for the Mocs while stopping the clock at 15:43.11. Just three spots behind Bailey was freshman Cameron Raney who placed 21st with a time of 15:47.23. The final Moccasin finisher was Simpson who took 34th overall after competing in both the mile and 5K. He stopped the clock at 18:27.06.

The Moccasins will close out the 2024 indoor track season next weekend in Boston, Mass. in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational.
