4x400m Relay Breaks 14-Year Old School Record in Tampa to Lead Women’s Track

TAMPA, Fla. – The Florida Southern College women's track team saw its second school record of the outdoor season fall in as many meets as the 4x400m relay team took down a 14-year old record set back in 2011. The Moccasins were competing at the Tampa Spartans Classic Friday afternoon as junior Caitlin Beery, freshman Heloise Pinto, sophomore Kira Mothershed and sophomore Flavia Almeida teamed up to post the record-breaking performance.

TOP PERFORMERS
  • The quartet of Beery, Pinto, Mothershed and Almeida teamed up to complete the relay in 4:11.60, breaking the record by over four seconds. The performance earned them second overall at the meet.
  • The opening event of the meet for FSC was the 1,500m as senior Emma Mussante posted the second-fastest time in program history while winning the race. Mussante completed the 1,500m in 4:43.35. Beery earned a top-five finish as she place fourth while crossing the finish in 4:51.43. The next two Mocs placed 12th and 14th, respectively, as Pinto and sophomore Emma Nales-Torchio nearly finished back-to-back. Pinto clocked in at 5:02.56 while Nales-Torchio crossed the line in 5:05.66. The final two finishers for FSC were freshman Katrina Machado (16th, 5:09.07) and senior Emily Opalinski (23rd, 5:48.47).
  • Four Moccasins entered the 800m as Almeida led the group in sixth while Mothershed finished just behind in seventh. Almeida turned in a time of 2:23.18 while Mothershed came across less than a second later at 2:24.11. The next two Mocs also went back-to-back as sophomore Ashley Girouard and freshman Lylah Mattingly claimed 18th and 19th, respectively. Girouard came across in 2:36.50 while Mattingly finished just under three seconds later at 2:39.28.
  • Seven Mocs completed the 5,000m Friday night as the top three FSC finishers went back-to-back-to-back. Graduate student Ellie Fluman, sophomore Grace Reed and junior Rachel Hockenberry finished seventh, eighth and ninth, respectively. Fluman came across in 17:46.72 while Reed finished just under a second later at 17:47.49 while Hockenberry came in less than a second behind Reed at 17:48.12. Just missing out on a top-10 finish was senior Mya Stam who placed 11th after completing the distance in 17:51.45. The final three Moccasin finishers were sophomore Emma Pfeiffer (20th, 18:39.50), freshman Alena Pezzoli (22nd, 18:44.67) and freshman Kira Casane (24th, 19:06.05).

The Moccasins will be back in action March 21-22 at the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by UCF.
