2026 SSC MGolf Preview

Men's Golf

#3 Men's Golf Set for the 2026 SSC Championship

The No. 3 Florida Southern men's golf team will take on the Sunshine State Conference Championships April 20-21 as part of a two-day, three-round tournament. The 17-time SSC champions will compete at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla., where they placed first in the last tournament they played at that course.

The Moccasins will send Max Barile, Donte Groppuso, Colton Swartz, Tyler Mistretta and Anthony Monteleone, with Jack VanderSchuur as a substitute, to the links in hopes of repeating as back-to-back Sunshine State Conference champions. All five Moccasins in the lineup, plus VanderSchuur, are ranked in the top 100 golfers in the nation, led by Barile at No. 2 (70.63 average), where Groppuso follows at No. 9 (72.86), VanderSchuur at No. 15 (72.20), Swartz at No. 34 (71.93), Mistretta at No. 56 (72.38), and Monteleone at No. 87 (72.58).

The Mocs have been on a tear in the 2025-26 season, especially picking up steam in their spring slate. Of the 10 tournaments Florida Southern has competed in, the Mocs have seven top-3 finishes, including four team wins. The Mocs have only had one tournament where the team finished over-par, and currently holds a 281.6 team scoring average.

Apart from the four team wins, the team has had three individual champions, with Donte Groppuso winning the Matlock Collegiate Classic (Feb. 9-10), Max Barile winning the Las Vegas Desert Classic (Mar. 1-3), and, most recently, Colton Swartz taking first at the Shark Invitational (Mar. 23-24). They have climbed the national rankings in both the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll and the Scoreboard by Clippd rankings. As of today, the Mocs rank No. 2 in this month's Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches Poll, and No. 3 in this week's Scoreboard by Clippd rankings. The Mocs also rank No. 3 in the region in the Scoreboard by Clippd rankings, demonstrating how the Mocs have competed in the toughest region in Division II against the best teams in the country.

Barile and Gropusso both reached the top rank in Division II this season, with Groppuso holding the top spot in the February 11th, 18th, and 25th rankings, while Barile held the top spot in the March 4th and 11th rankings, before re-appearing in the top spot on April 8th. Florida Southern has had five SSC Golfer of the Week honors this season, with Barile as a two-time recipient.

Barile, Gropusso, and the rest of the Mocs will be led by head coach Brian Richey, who, led the Mocs to their first SSC Championship since 2010 last season. As a golfer, he led the Mocs to an SSC Championship in 2008, and was a part of the coaching staff for the Mocs' 2010 championship.

Tournament play will kick off Monday at 8:30 AM with a shotgun start.
