The Moccasins battled an undefeated Northwood (Mich.) team through seven matches before Northwood claimed the final two singles matches for a 6-3 win Monday at the FSC Courts.
Coming out of the doubles competition the Timberwolves had a 2-1 lead. Nathan Leavitt and Charles Garneau had the Moccasin win with an 8-2 decision at No. 3.
The two teams traded victories through the first four singles matches. Northwood won in straight sets at No. 3, then the Moccasins got a straight-set, 6-1, 6-1 win from Carl Lundberg at No. 6. Northwood (5-0) posted another straight-set win at No. 2 and the Moccasins answered with a three-set win by Leavitt at No. 4, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4. That left the Moccasins trailing 4-3.
Benoit Paradis and Northwood's Teddy Mebounou split their first two sets at No. 1 before Mebounou pulled out a 7-5 decision in the third set to get the clinching win, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Northwood picked up a three-set win at No. 5 for its final point.
Leavitt, posting wins in both singles and doubles, evened his singles record at 6-6. Lundberg's win improved his team-best singles record to 6-3.
The Moccasins (4-8) are right back in action Tuesday with a 3 p.m. match against another team from Michigan, Wayne State, at the FSC Courts.
