Mocs Conclude Homestand With Setback to No. 3 Barry

LAKELAND – Florida Southern concluded its four match homestand here Saturday afternoon by dropping a 9-0 decision to third-ranked in Sunshine State Conference action at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.

The Moccasins, who are ranked 32nd in the latest ITA Tennis rankings, fell to 3-13 overall and 1-3 in the SSC, while Barry improved to 11-0 and 2-0 in the SSC.

In doubles play, the Mocs had a chance to pick up a win at the No. 2 spot as senior Charles Garneau (L'ancienne-Lorette, Quebec) and freshman Brian Slivonik (Apopka, Fla.) gave Barry's tandem of Fabian Pronnet and Renato Lombardi all they could handle in its 9-7 win.

Barry won the other two doubles matches by scores of 8-2 and 8-1 to take a 3-0 lead in the match.

Meanwhile, in the singles action, Barry swept all six of them to post the shutout victory.

Despite the shutout, the Mocs gave Barry some competitive matches as sophomore Fabian Lundberg (Akersberga, Sweden) pushed Pronnet at the No. 1 spot to a third set tiebreaker and the Mocs had three of the single games decided by idential 7-5 scores. 

At the No. 1 spot, Lundberg won the first set 6-3, before Pronnet posted a 6-0 win in the second set to force a tiebreaker. Lundberg and Pronnet went back and forth in the tiebreaker, until Pronnet was able to pull out a 10-6 win.

Sophomore Laurent Mailloux (Montreal, Quebec) took five games off of Dominik Haider in the first set, but would fall 6-1 in the second set to give Haider the victory.

The Mocs also posted 7-5 scores in the second sets at both the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. At the No. 3 spot, Viallaneix fell 6-1 in the first set to Lombardi, before pushing him in the second set before falling 7-5, while Garneau fell 7-5 in the second set at the No. 4 spot to Franco Echenique after dropping a 6-4 decision in the first set.

Barry won the other two singles matches by scores of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-1.

FSC will return to action next weekend as they play four matches in three days in Pensacola, Fla. FSC will open the stretch on Friday, March 27 as they face Alabama-Huntsville and Christian Brothers, before playing top-ranked West Florida on Saturday, March 28 and then facing 10th-ranked Valdosta State on March 29.
