Mocs Minutes: Several Spring Sports in Action at Home This Weekend

  • Florida Southern won six straight matches over the last couple weeks before a near upset of Division I opponent UCONN on Tuesday to snap their win streak. The Mocs lost the doubles point against the Huskies, as they were unable to tally enough points for a win over UCONN. Minnie Kim and Vivien Charvatova was the Moccasin pairing to notch a doubles flight win and carried the action into singles. Olivia Bryant won her flight in a commanding 6-0, 6-1 victory as both teams traded flight wins. Isabella Bolivar was next to win her flight as UCONN was one point away from the match win leading to a #2 battle. Mathilda Vidgren won her first set but was just short in winning set two. The tiebreaking third set went to the Huskies 6-1 on their way to a match win. Flor Salerno earned the last point for the Mocs with a three-set victory.
  • IUP meet in Melbourne to play the Mocs after losing their last three matches, including a 2-5 loss to St. Mary's on Tuesday. Despite no national ranking, the Crimson Hawks have ranked singles and doubles pairing with consistent wins. Although they did not get the doubles point, the No. 25 pairing of Karolin Kirchtag and Katy Graydon won their flight in a 7-6 (7-4) decision. Kirchtag, No. 13 in singles competition, won her singles match against No. 41 Marina Vigil in three sets, as Graydon gave the IUP their second point in the 5-2 loss.
  • St. Mary's has had a great start to the season, winning their first seven matches, before they had their first loss of the 2022 spring season in a 4-3 loss to Embry-Riddle. The Rattlers won the doubles point but was unbale to tally enough flight wins during singles competition for the win. No. 12 Ashley Penshorn lost to No. 39 Itxaso Blanco in an upset, as No. 41 Marina Vigil rallied to beat her ERAU opponent. St. Mary's will take on No. 2 Nova Southeastern today before their match against the Mocs.
  • #28 West Virginia State will return to play after their last two matches have been postponed or canceled as they head to Lakeland. The Yellow Jackets won their last match in a 4-3 win over the University of Findlay to break their two-game losing stint. WVSU lost to Davidson College in an exhibition match 6-1, with a 7-0 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne University in mid-February. Their only flight win during singles against Davidson was in three sets by Tuva Wallin, with Gaya Solomon and Chante Malo a doubles flight win in the 6-1 loss to the Wildcats.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs will compete against IUP for the first time in program history on Friday, with a split 1-1 series against St. Mary's where the Rattlers won last time out in a 6-3 Moccasin loss in 2016. Florida Southern is 3-0 when playing West Virginia State, with an 8-1 win back in 2018 the last time these two have met.

  • Florida Southern are finally back in action and earned a sweep in Tuesday non-conference doubleheader against Bloomsburg. The Mocs were led by freshman Mariah Rodriguez in game two as the designated player had a perfect day from the plate going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Southern defeated the Huskies 3-1 in game one before an 8-0 shutout in run-rule fashion gave the Mocs the sweep. In the circle, Lane Edgington and Kayla Hickey each received the win pitching complete games and striking out two batters a piece.
  • In conference play the Mocs are still looking for their first win hoping it comes this weekend against Eckerd on Friday and Saturday. FSC are currently sitting fifth in the SSC with batting averages with a .278 as the top average is just a .289 from the top team in the SSC Saint Leo. Jadin Dewith still sits in first in conference play with hitting, supporting a .556 batting average going 10-for-18 with three runs scored, one double, and an RBI.
  • On the season, seniors Myah Moy and Jadin Dewith are leading the way. Both have started in every game for FSC as Dewith is 26-for-63 on the season followed by Moy going 26-for-69 with a .413 batting average and .377. Freshman Destiny Colgate is still the lone Moc with a homer on the season but brings in 13 runners along with Moy and nine doubles for the freshman.
  • Eckerd is currently supporting a 11-8 record and is on a five game win streak defeating Bloomsburg as well on Sunday with 6-0 and 2-1 wins. The Tritons last conference win was on March 5 against Florida Tech with a 3-0 decision at Eckerd. The Tritons are currently sitting at the bottom of the conference in batting average with a .196 and seventh in pitching with a 2.97 ERA.
  • The Tritons are led by freshman Brenna Lokeinsky with a .324 batting average going 23-for 71 from the plate. She has three homers on the year, a triple, four doubles and 12 RBIs. Sophomore Skylar Redish is hitting .267 with four home runs in 16 hits and is leading the Tritons with 13 RBIs. In the circle, Hannah Perkins is leading the Tritons supporting a 1.71 ERA pitching 11 complete games striking out 45 batters on the season.
  • West Georgia has opened up their season on the road with a 6-1 run with the last two wins being against Shorter in Gulf South Conference action. They defeated the Lady Hawks with a sweep by scores of 8-0 and 8-6 on Sunday. The Wolves will take on Delta State in a 3-game conference series over the weekend before heading to FSC for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday.
  • The Wolves are led by juniors Chandler Mevis and Kristyn Nix who are averaging a .358 and .354 on the season. Mevis is 24-for- 67 with seven doubles and nine RBIs. Nix has a one homer, three triples, five doubles, and has 23 hits in 65 at bats.
  • HISTORY: Against Eckerd, the Mocs have a 133 wins over Eckerds 14, with the last matuchup being a loss for FSC. West Georgia and Florida Southern have only competed agaisnt each other in nine games as Mocs are on top eight to 1. The Mocs are on a three game win streak against the Wolves.

  • Florida Southern returns to Lakeland after winning their series, 2-1, against the University of Alabama in Huntsville last weekend. The Mocs outscored the Chargers 30-17 over the three-game series, including a grand slam by Connor Berry in game one for a Moccasin 19-5 win. Florida Southern had consecutive games with back-to-back home runs as Nathan Chevalier and Duncan Hunter each homered in Friday's game, with Ahmad Fitts and Tor Sehnert each sending one over the fence in game one of Sunday's doubleheader. Hunter's hit-streak came to an end in game two of the doubleheader, with a team-high 20 straight games with at least one hit. The Mocs also tied their season-high of hits in Friday's 19-5 win.
  • Leading the Mocs is Hunter with a .392 batting average through 23 games, as does Jeff Liquori with a .358 average. Hunter has a slight advantage in RBI, with 23, as Liquori is right behind with 21. Liquori is third in the conference in slugging percentage, with a .737, and second in the conference in home runs with eight. Hunter is third in the conference in home runs, hitting seven from deep on the season.
  • On the mound the Mocs will continue to look to Brant Brown, Aric McAtee, and Andrew Williamson as rotating starters with Michel LeRoy. Nathan Madej, a two-time SSC Pitcher of the Week in 2022, will also look at starting positions in the coming series and weeks. As relievers, Dawson Lane has tallied two saves and 1.59 ERA in 17 innings pitched, with Ryan Langford a team-high three saves on the season. As a team, the Mocs average 4.52 ERA in 782 at-bats during the season.
  • Eckerd enters with a 9-12 overall record, with a 6-5 win against Florida Tech on Saturday, but lost the season series 2-1. The Tritons won their game over the Panthers after losing their last three in back-to-back games against Florida Tech, and a close 11-10 loss against Barry. Eckerd took an early 6-1 lead heading into the eighth inning in game two of the doubleheader after scoring four runs in the fourth inning, before Florida Tech went on a run of their own in the ninth inning scoring four runs. The Tritons held off a Panther rally as they defeated Florida Tech 6-5 on just six hits.
  • Eckerd is led by Mikey Burke with a .305 batting average with Joe Wike right behind him at .299 on the season. Tyler Cox and Jake Andriole lead the team in RBI with 19 so far, and the team sending 12 home runs. On the mound the Tritons rely on Jacob Stipp who leads with 37.2 innings pitched and an ERA OF 3.82, and Brendan Lawry trailing right behind him with 33.0 innings pitched and an ERA of 3.82 as well. As a team Eckerd averages 4.80 ERA a game and has given up eight home runs on the season.
  • Saint Leo will host Florida Southern in a non-conference midweek matchup after sweeping Barry University last weekend. The Lions had a 13-0 win on Friday and followed up with an 8-7 win and 12-8 win to seal the sweep. Jared Beck led Saint Leo on the mound in game one with four hits, no runs, and 12 strikeouts over seven innings to earn SSC and NCBWA South Region Pitcher of the Week honors. In game three, Bobby Sparling notched a two-run homer, his 13th, and SSC-leading, home run of the season.
  • In addition to the deep ball, Sparling leads the Lions with a .454 batting average, with Adrein Roa, Buck Anderson, Sam Crail, and Tyler Trovinger each batting over .300. A problem the earlier conference series matchup with the Mocs, Anderson is 23-for-26 in stolen bases, with Crail 17-for-20. As a team, the Lions average 4.45 ERA per game with 19 home runs allowed. In addition to Beck, the Lions start Dariel Fregio, Brayden Heidel, and Andy Booth with the msot innings pitched.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold an overall 147-39 series advantage against the Eckerd Tritons, with a 15-inning 9-7 win in their last matchup on February 15th, 2022. With great historical success playing in Lakeland, Florida Southern looks to get three huge conference wins. Against the Lions this will be the fourth meeting between the two teams this season with the last meeting resulting in a 3-1 win for the Mocs on February 20th, 2022. The Mocs took a 2-1 season series lead, and with a 135-55 overall series record and a 73-22 home record.

  • #6 Florida Southern plays hosts to Alabama-Huntsville and Colorado Mesa this weekend while hosting alumni day on Saturday.
  • The Moccasins are 4-1 after fending off Wingate 19-13 on March 9 at home for the third straight victory, and fifth straight game at home. In the win over the Bulldogs, Madison Tare and Abby McFerren led the Mocs in scoring with four goals apiece while McFerren tied for the team lead in assists to give her the lead in points for the game with six. Hailey Daleo and Ellie Griffin found the back of the net three times apiece for their hattricks.
  • On the year, the Mocs have scored 88 goals over five games behind Ellie Griffin's team best 13 goals. A trio of scorers stand at 11 goals entering the weekend in Abby McFerren, Madison Tare, and Hailey Daleo. McFerren, the team leader in assists with nine, holds the team lead in points with 20 this season.
  • In goal, Brittany Iamele is 2-0 with 106:34 minutes played and 17 saves while Patricia Werker is 2-1 in 167:09 minutes of action with 23 saves. Sydney O'Neill and Rylie Rittberg have seen time in the cage and have four and three saves, respectively.
  • UAH dropped two games to other Sunshine State Conference opponents earlier this week. The Chargers fell to #8 Rollins on Sunday by a score of 8-11, and to #16 Embry-Riddle by a score of 11-19. Cara Brown, Isadora Springer and Katie Gerber combined for eight of the Chargers 11 goals against Embry-Riddle on Wednesday night.
  • On the season, the Chargers are led by Cara Brown who has tallied 26 goals and three assists in eight games. Just behind Brown are Hailey Gallant and Isadora Springer, each tallying over 20 points through eight games.
  • In goal, Shaina Doser has started seven of the Chargers eight games, seeing over 350 minutes of action. Doser has made 49 saves through eight games with a record of 2-3.
  • Colorado Mesa begins their Florida trip taking on the Mocs before facing #8 Rollins and #23 Saint Leo next week. Colorado Mesa is coming off of three wins, including two RMAC wins to kick off their season. They defeated their most recent matchup from McKendree University by a score of 16-5.
  • On the season, Kiley Davis leads Mesa with nine goals and five assists for a total of 14 points. Regan Wentz and Taylor Jakeman follow close behind in the scoring race, Wentz with nine points (7g, 2a) and Jakeman with 10 points (6g, 4a).
  • In goal, Shannon Murphy has seen the most action, starting all three games and playing 135 minutes. Murphy has only allowed 5 goals and has made 8 saves on the season.
  • HISTORY: Florida Southern will face off against Alabama Huntsville for the first time in program history on Friday evening. The Moccasins have a 1-0 record against Colorado Mesa, with the sole meeting coming almost exactly nine years ago on March 19th, 2013. The Moccasins won that game by a final tally of 22-9.

  • Florida Southern women's track had another strong performance in Tampa in their second meet of the year. The Moccasins posted a pair of top-10 all-time program times including the second fastest 100m time and the sixth fastest 5K time.
  • Junior Rebecca Ramsay bested her performance from the UT Track Classic where she ran the fourth fastest 100m time in program history. The New Liskeard, Ontario native took fourth overall at the UT Distance Classic but ran the second fastest 100m time in program history with a time of 13.26. Ramsay also competed in the 200m where she took eighth in 28.13.
  • Sophomore Ellie Fluman led a group of 10 Mocs in the 5,000m as she took third overall with the sixth fastest time in program history at 17:44.38. Freshman Marisa Kortright was next across the line for the Mocs as she took 23rd overall in a time of 18:35.13.
  • Saturday's meet will mark the first trip for the Florida Southern track program to Cleveland, Tenn. as the Mocs take part in the Lee Invitational.
  • Florida Southern men's track saw senior Mason Jones set another school record at the UT Distance Classic in the team's last outing. Jones, who opened the 2022 season with a school record in the 3,000m, broke his own 5,000m record at the UT Distance Classic. The time was also below the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championship provisional standard by over six seconds and the fastest 5,000m time run by an NCAA Division II athlete this season.
  • Jones led a group of 13 Moccasins in the 5,000m as he topped the 99-member field with a school record time of 14:19.08. Graduate student Joshua Wagner was the next to cross the finish line as he posted the fourth fastest 5,000m time in program history at 14:32.07.

  • Florida Southern continues to dominate on the sand as they have just finished a 7-0 win streak on the road at the Huntingdon Beach Bash in Alabama. The Mocs swept all matches with a 5-0 decision. The Mocs had a rematch against Saint Leo on Tuesday, and it ended the same as the first with a 3-2 loss. Southern's two wins came in the No. 2 match and No. 5 as Erica Ronda and Celia-Rae Creco won 21-18, 21-18 in the No.2 and Hayley St. Martin and Curry Ward dominated the No. 5 match 21-19, 21-16.
  • On the season, each pair has at least seven wins with the No.5 pair of Hayley St. Martin and Curry Ward are still undefeated on the year.
  • Stevenson is currently on a two game win streak with the last wins being against Webber and Warner in a tri-match. The Mustangs defeated the Warriors 3-2 before taking down Webber 4-1. The last two losses for the Stevenson was against SSC opponents as PBA and Eckerd took the Mustangs down in a trimatch with a 3-2 loss and straight sets against the Sailfish.
  • Tampa has been facing nationally ranked opponents but the Spartans fell to No. 4 Florida State 3-0 and No. 2 USC 5-0 over the weekend. Prior to the losses Tampa was on a four game win streak defeating College of Charleston 4-1, Eckerd 5-0, Saint Leo 4-1, and Missouri State 4-1.
  • Jacksonville has started out their season with a 5-9 start currently riding out a 3-2 over Morehead State after falling in the first three games during the College of Charleston Classic.

  • #16 Florida Southern is coming off one of the biggest victories in program history and biggest upset this season in NCAA Division II men's lacrosse as the Moccasins knocked off the defending National Champions Le Moyne, 12-10 this past Monday. The loss snapped a 23-game win streak by the Dolphins as well as a 24-game regular season win streak. The victory marked the first win over a number-one ranked team in program history for the Mocs. Saturday's game will mark the beginning of Sunshine State Conference play for the Mocs while Tuesday's contest will be the final non-conference opponent on the 2022 regular season schedule.
  • The Mocs currently rank third in NCAA Division II in assists (74), ground balls (325) and points (198) while ranking in the top-10 in caused turnovers per game (9th/12.75), clearing percentage (9th/.880), face-off winning percentage (8th/.682) and opponent clear percentage (6th/.713).
  • Junior Jeff Atlas continues to lead the team in points and assists while ranking second in goals. He has 20 goals, 24 assists and 44 points through eight games this season. He currently ranks first in the Sunshine State Conference in assists per game (3.00), second in points per game (5.50) and seventh in goals per game (2.50). Atlas also ranks eighth in NCAA Division II in assists per game and 15th in points per game. Junior Sean Nolan leads the team in goals with 22 while ranking third in the conference in goals per game with 2.75.
  • Senior Kevin Horwitz continues to give the Mocs an advantage at the X as he has won 69.9 percent of his face offs (144-206) this season including a 73.8 percent clip (96-130) in Florida Southern victories. He currently has 84 ground balls this season and ranks second in the SSC in ground balls per game (10.50) while leading the conference in face off winning percentage (.699). He also currently ranks seventh in the NCAA in face off winning percentage and fifth in ground balls per game.
  • In goal for the Mocs, junior Maxwell Freestone has emerged as the starter for the program as he picked up 12 huge saves in the victory over #1 Le Moyne while holding the Dolphins scoreless over the final 12 and a half minutes of action. He has seen 259:31 minutes of action with a 10.64 goals against average. He has 46 saves this season and a 3-2 overall record.
  • Lynn is 1-5 so far this season with losses to Tampa, Queens, Rollins, Westminster and Lindenwood. The lone victory for the Fighting Knights came at home versus Assumption, a 17-8 victory.
  • Graduate student Matthew Ilchuk leads the Fighting Knights with 21 points this season, coming off team-bests 12 goals and nine assists. Fellow graduate student Xander Cosenza has 10 goals and six assists to rank second in the team with 16 points. Two others have 10 goals to rank tied for second on the squad in the category. The Fighting Knights have used seven different athletes at the face off X with freshman Charlie Shannon seeing the most action and winning 45.0 percent of his attempts (27-60). Two different goalkeepers have seen action in the cage with senior Colin Casey leading the way. He has a 14.17 goals against average with four starts and 43 saves.
  • RV Frostburg State is 2-2 this season and enters the weekend on a two-game win streak with victories over Walsh and Chestnut Hill. The Bobcats are scheduled to face Saint Leo on Sunday before travelling to Lakeland for Tuesday night's match-up.
  • Senior Jake Bowman leads the Bobcats with 12 points through four games. He has seven goals and five assists. Senior Joey Boros leads the team in goals with eight while junior Bubba Love leads the team in assists with six. Senior Cade Price handles most of the face off opportunities and has won 47.3 percent of his attempts this season (26-55). Senior Kevin Reuther has seen all the action in net for the Bobcats with 40 saves and a 12.25 goals against average this season.
  • HISTORY: Saturday will mark the eighth meeting between the Lynn Fighting Knights and the Florida Southern Moccasins. FSC holds a slight 4-3 advantage in the series but the Fighting Knights won the most recent meeting 13-8 in Boca Raton back in 2021. The Mocs won the most recent meeting in Lakeland 13-9 in 2019. The Tuesday night contest with FSU will be the second meeting between the two programs. Frostburg State won the first meeting 16-8 in 2020 as the Mocs faced the Bobcats on March 12, 2020 marking the final contest before the COVID-19 shutdown. The game took place in Frostburg, Md. with Jeff Atlas netting a pair of goals in the loss.

  • Florida Southern returns to the links for the second straight week and after placing 14th at the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate earlier this week. The Moccsains tallied a team score of 860 (+26) to conclude the 54-hole event.
  • Sam Rogers paced the team with a 37th place finish at five-over 221, a stroke ahead of Johnny Tucker who finished in 42nd place, 222 (+6).
  • The last time the Moccasins competed at the Bobcat Invitational was March 18-19, 2019. The Mocs were scheduled to compete in the 2020 tournament but due to CoVID19 the tournament was cancelled. At the 2019 tournament, Florida Southern captured a second place finish with a team score of 863 (+23).
  • Johnny Tucker is the lone player on the current roster to have played at the 2019 tournament where he carded a 217 (+7) to finish tied for 17th out of the 81 players in the field. Tucker fired off rounds of 68, 71, 78 to comprise his 54-hole event.

  • Florida Southern heads to Miami Shores after a sixth place finish out of 12 teams at the Peggy Kirk Bell Memorial on March 14-15 at Orange Tree in Orlando, Fla. The Moccasins carded a team score of 966 (+102) over the 54-holes.
  • Loren Perez and Nathelie Svensson led the Mocs at the PKB Invitational with sixth and 13th place finishes, respectively. Perez finished at 229 (+13) while Svensson was at 234 (+18) for the 54-hole event.
  • At last year's BarryU Invitational, Florida Southern captured a sixth-place finish with a score of 905. Svensson paced the team with a 14th place finish at 223 (+7).

  • Florida Southern will face one of their toughest matches of the season as they face No. 3 Saint Leo next Wednesday. The No. 25 Mocs have built a seven-game winning streak heading into the match after they cracked the top-25 with back-to-back wins over No. 21 University of Charleston and No. 23 AUM. Valentin Hertweck has led the way for the Mocs, ranked 72nd in singles competition, as well as national rankings for doubles with partners Chris Fok Kow (#23) and Brian Pham (#44). Florida Southern won 7-0 against Quincy their last time out. The Mocs won all of their singles flights including wins by Hertweck, Oscar Sohl, Elliott Altman, Erik Nordblom, Matteo Feggi, and Hikaru Nagoshi.
  • #3 Saint Leo will host the Mocs next week as the Lions carry an undefeated home record so far this season. The last loss for Saint Leo was back on February 10th, at the start of the season, in a 4-3 loss against Embry-Riddle. Since the Lions have won eight straight matches, with their last win a 5-2 decision against Wayne State. The No. 8 pairing of Bruno Faletto and Willem Van Den Akker won their flight over No. 22 Wayne State pairing as top ranked Faletto (#13) and Vincent Thiel (#30) won their singles competition matches.
  • HISTORY: The Mocs hold a 30-14 advantage over the Lions during their tennis program history. Saint Leo won the last time out in a 5-2 score on April 7th, 2021 as the Lions have won the last 14 matches in a row over the Mocs starting in April 2011. Florida Southern had a 30-game win streak leading up to their loss in the April 2011 match.
