Pair of School Records Fall on Opening Day on UNF Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the second time this season both the men's and women's 3000m steeplechase school records fell for the Florida Southern men's and women's track teams as they opened up action at the UNF Invitational against some of the top competition from throughout the southeast. Graduate student Mitchell Kozik and sophomore Carolina Titus broke their own school records Friday night as they each lowered their times by more than three seconds.

TOP PERFORMERS
FLORIDA SOUTHERN WOMEN:
  • Sophomore Carolina Titus took eighth overall Friday night in the 3000m steeplechase but her time of 11:42.52 lowered her school record by over four seconds.  
  • Sophomore Ellie Fluman led a trio of Mocs in the 5000m. She took 11th overall but was the top Division II finisher in the race. Her time of 17:40.86 was her fastest of the season and ranked as the fifth fastest in program history. Freshman Emma Mussante was next to cross for FSC as she took 17th with a time of 17:59.55. Senior Alayna Goll rounded out the trio with a 23rd place finish after crossing the line in 18:23.30.
  • Freshman Marisa Kortright and sophomore Jinia Johnson competed in the 1500m for the Mocs and took 22nd and 25th, respectively. Kortright stopped the clock at 4:51.83, good for the 14th fastest time in program history, while Johnson crossed the line in 4:53.70.
 
FLORIDA SOUTHERN MEN:
  • Graduate student Mitchell Kozik once again set a new school record in the 3000m steeplechase as he won the event Friday night against a field full of Division I runners. He lowered his previous school record by just under four seconds as he crossed the finish in 9:14.85.
  • Senior Mason Jones and graduate student Joshua Wagner took seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 5000m and were the top two Division II finishers in the race. Jones completed the distance in 14:37.62 which ranks as the 10th fastest time in program history while Wagner clocked in at 14:40.77 which ranks as the 15th fastest time.
  • Wagner also competed in the 1500m where he led a group of four in the event. Wagner took 12th overall with the eighth fastest time in program history at 3:52.13. He was also the second Division II finisher in the race. Junior Alex Guy finished four spots back in 16th at 3:55.79 and was the third DII finisher. Junior Brady Zimmerman clocked in at 4:01.23 to take 28th while sophomore Bryson Yamnitz finished four spots behind him in 32nd. Yamnitz stopped the clock at 4:02.71.
 
UP NEXT:
The Florida Southern women will be in action tomorrow morning on the final day of the UNF Invitational while the men will return to action Saturday, May 14 at the Lee University Last Chance Meet.
