LAKELAND, Fla. – Florida Southern College's
Greg Van Emburgh has stepped down as the men's tennis head coach, due to personal reasons, announced by the athletic department Thursday. Van Emburgh has been the Moccasin's head coach since the 2017-18 season.
"Greg has done a great job leading the men's tennis team in his five seasons at Florida Southern," said Director of Athletics and Dean of Wellness
Drew Howard. "We thank him for all his leadership of the student-athletes and wish him the very best moving forward."
During his time with the Mocs, Van Emburgh compiled a 41-40 record, fighting through two shortened seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Consistently in the top 25 among Division II tennis programs, Van Emburgh helped lead Florida Southern to three Sunshine State Conference tournament appearances. In their most successful season in years, last month the men's tennis earned its first NCAA tournament bid since the 2016 season.
In addition to the program's success on the court, Van Emburgh has coached 16 ITA Scholar-Athletes, 27 D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award winners, and 53 named to the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll. In consecutive years, the men's tennis team earned ITA All-Academic Team honors in 2018 and 2019.
Prior to leading the Moccasins, Van Emburgh spent 10 years at Wisconsin as their head coach. He had four straight NCAA tournament appearances with the Badgers and had 10 athletes named to the All-Big Ten Team. Playing collegiately at the University of Kentucky from 1985-88, Van Emburgh was their first All-American in program history. An ATP Tour professional for 10 years, he won 10 ATP Tour doubles titles and seven ATP individual titles, while also a 1990 semifinalist at Wimbledon. Once he finished his professional career. Van Emburgh coached at his alma mater before his time at Wisconsin.
A national search for a new Florida Southern men's tennis coach will commence immediately.
