CLEARWATER, Fla. – Day two of the Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championships saw several Florida Southern College Moccasins represented on the podium at the Long Center in Clearwater, Fla.
The Mocs had five individual student-athletes podium over the men and women's 50-yard freestyle, men's 200 IM, and the men's 200-yard medley relay. The men's team currently sits second overall and the women in third after day two of events. Sophomore
Jazzy Hoffmann set a new school record in the 50-yard freestyle after setting a 22.95 time during the finals.
Kyle Micallef set a new SSC meet record with his 19.64 time in the 50-yard freestyle.
"We had some great swims and a really nice job tonight," said head coach
Andy Robins. "Tonight was a really big boost for us energy-wise…we had great team energy and the athletes fed on themselves."
The meet began with the 1000-yard freestyle, which freshman
Olivia Miles finished eighth (10:16.35) after improving her seed time by seven seconds. Florida Southern's first podium finish came in the men's turn at the 1000-yard freestyle when
Elder Oliveira placed third with a time of 9:13.21.
Keith Peristeridis and
Cole Smith each finished in the top 10 in the same event.
During the 200 IM, the women were represented by
Emily Peck in eighth and a time of 2:06.80. In a great battle for the men,
Matteo Zampese finished first (1:46.05) in the 200 IM alongside
Ludovico Viberti, who finished third (1:48.06).
Brandon Dyck was ninth, winning the consolation trial, to round of the Mocs in the top 10 in the 200 IM.
Setting a new SSC Championship meet record in the 50-yard freestyle, Micallef finished first with a time of 19.64 as
JJ Saslo also placed in the top 10. On the women's side, Hoffmann finished second with a time of 22.95, setting a new FSC school record, with
Rachel Cunningham the consolation trial winner for ninth place.
A team of
Teagan Michalek, Alizee Pelletier, Kennidi TenEyck, and Cunningham placed fifth in the 200-yard medley relay. A nail-biting 200-yard medley relay for the men resulted in a second-place finish by the Mocs. The team of Dyck, Zampese, Saslo, and Micallef was just five-tenths of a second behind.
