Credited with elevating Florida Southern to a national level, Hal Smeltzly began his career at Florida Southern as baseball player before taking over as head coach following his graduation in 1957. For his 20 years as head baseball coach, Smeltzly compiled a 391-166 winning percentage and won three NCAA National Championships as well as six regional crowns. Under his guidance as director of athletics, the Moccasin athletic program went on to win 18 more NCAA National Championships. He is a member of the ABCA, Royal Dutch Sports, Florida Sports, Polk County Sports and FSC Baseball Halls of Fame. His baseball uniform, #7, is retired. (Coach Smeltzly passed away in 2018)
