JAY SMITH
Baseball, 1971-73

Perhaps the most dominating pitcher in Moccasin history, Jay Smith set FSC records with 43 career wins and an amazing 471 strikeouts over 412.2 innings pitched. Those three records still stand today, some 30 years following his brilliant career. A two-time All-American, Smith was the first Moccasin to win 15 games in a single season at FSC, accomplishing that feat as a sophomore in 1971. His 149 strikeouts that season stood as a school record for 23 seasons while his 138.1 innings pitched in 1971 still stands as the most innings ever pitched by a Moccasin in a single season. A member of the Mocs’ 1971 and 1972 NCAA Division II National Championship Teams, he was named 1972 Moccasin Most Valuable Player and was drafted by the San Diego Padres following his senior season. A 1973 graduate, Smith had his jersey, number 20, retired by Florida Southern.
